"FRA-GEEL-LAY!!" IT MUST BE ITALIAN.,
By Unlucky Frank (Lalaland, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Christmas Story Movie Official Table Leg Lamp
I had to have this the first time I saw it!! A friend sent me an email photo of the full size 40" LEG LAMP. The full size model was just too expensive. I couldn't justify spending that kind of money on something I'm only going to drag out once a year. The 20" model is great. I only payed 40 bucks for it at SUNCOAST VIDEO.
MAKES A EXCELLENT HOLIDAY GIFT FOR THAT HARD-TO-BUY-FOR FRIEND WHO LOVES THE MOVIE. It's a realistic replica of the one Daren McGavin receives in CHRISTMAS STORY. The lamp shade is made with a nice fabric, it's the right color, and it has the cheesy fringe around the bottom. The leg is wrapped in a beautiful fishnet stocking and has a standard socket on top. It also lights up inside the leg. Which begs the question; how am I gonna get inside the leg to change THAT bulb once it burns out? The lamp doesn't come with instructions or a switch on the cord. There is a sticker on the socket with a WARNING: DUE TO THE RISK OF FIRE DO NOT TO USE ANYTHING LARGER THAN A 40 WATT BULB, so you won't catch the lamp shade on fire. Also the leg stands a tiny bit crooked, which is okay because it's supposed to look cheesy. Just don't tighten the shade all the way down and it will level out and hang nicely. Mine is displayed prominently in my living room window. Who needs a Christmas tree?... After all, "IT'S A MAJOR AWARD!!"

It's A Major Award!,

This is a great little lamp that is suitable for placement in the front window of any house; after all, it's a major award! The thing that is great about this lamp is that not only is it relatively inexpensive, but it doesn't take up much room, unlike the real size (40 inch) lamp (which I also have, and also endorse highly) which tends to overwhelm smaller rooms.
The lamp works great, although the maximum bulb wattage is pretty restrictive. The actual lamp looks even better than the Amazon illustration (particularly the hose on the leg, which appear to have a finer mesh than depicted) and it looks especially great when the internal leg light is on. This is a great gift: it's fun, affordable, and adds a touch of class to any room (well it at least adds a touch of fun, if not class.) This is a great little leg lamp at an attractive price, but always remember: it's fra-gee-lay.

Lousy lamp, lousy purchase,
This review is from: A Christmas Story Movie Official Table Leg Lamp
I don't think I've ever been as disappointed with a purchase from Amazon. On Christmas day and we gave this lamp to my father in-law. He plugs it in and turns it on...POP. The bulb appears to burn out, so I go get another. We put in the new bulb and turn on. Nothing. We turn the switch again...smoke! Then the wall outlet scorches and the circuit breaker pops.
After disassembling the lamp, we discover TWO electrical problems: 1. the switch is faulty and 2. it has been wired incorrectly. I could not have been more embarassed. We spent 3 hours re-building the lamp becase father-in-law felt bad and wouldn't let me return it. $64 with shipping for a piece of trash. The next day we purchased all the necessary equipment to re-wire the entire lamp. Also had to buy a new wall outlet to replace the scorched one! No warranty info, company info, or ANYTHING in the box. Basically you will get a box with the lamp inside. I plan to pursue this for my own satisfaction, but please be warned. It was a great gift (and I still believe a great idea). Unfortunately it was costly, embarassing, and above all dangerous!

A major awar^h^h^h^h disappointment,

This is one of those products that leads one to high expectations, and delivers the exact opposite.
Considering the high shipping costs for such a light item ($15 to ship something only a few pounds? What gives??!!) it arrived awfully late. I suppose you could chalk it up to being the Christmas season. Then again, the lamp purchase was one of several parts of the same order, made at the same time. For items I ordered from Amazon that day (mostly books and DVDs), I opted for their free "super saver" shipping, and they arrived at my house 6 days before the lamp. Adding up the weight of the books (some of them were big) and the DVDs, the total non-lamp package was twice as heavy as the lamp alone. $15 for late shipping of something light vs. *free*, fast shipping for double the weight . . . Yeah, the company distributing the leg lamps through Amazon is using a lot of BS tactics. When I opened the box and pulled it out, my heart sank. The size was a disappointment. I guess I was thinking the leg portion of the lamp was 20", instead of the whole thing (from base to top of lamp). After I set it up, I measured it and it turns out to be 19", not the 20" they've advertised. It was at this point when I realized I'd been had. I just spent nearly $75 (when you add in shipping) on a novelty lamp that is way too small; when I put it in the window to show off the neighbors, you can't even make out that it's a leg lamp from the curb. The overall quality of the lamp is hit and miss. There are parts of the lamp (the shade, for example) that look like they were built with quality materials and craftsmanship. Other parts seem crummy and wouldn't withstand more then a couple of moves. The bulb in the leg portion of the lamp was DOA (assuming, of course, there was even a bulb in there to begin with). The process of getting to that inside bulb is pretty tricky. However, they included instructions. I suppose the one good thing I can say about it is that since it's so small, it is less likely to draw the "trash it" mentality a significant other might have, or if you have your boss over for dinner and you forget to hide the lamp, it's less likely for her to notice. Shame, really. For the price they charge I would expect the full size lamp. For this novelty lamp a price tag of $35 including shipping is a more realistic cost. If you're considering buying one, before you purchase take a tape measure and see first hand how small 19" is from the top of the desk or table to the top of the lamp you'd be getting. Also, consider how far from the floor you'd place it. The distance between the bottom of the lamp shade-sans the near transparent tassels--and the base surface is 11 ¼". The `leg' base stops looking like a leg and more like any other lamp at 10 ¼". This means that unless you're seated several inches above the bottom of the lamp shade, you'll see the leg terminating. If this is an absolute "must have" item for you (though I can't imagine anyone actually `needing the leg lamp), go for it. For the rest of us, I'd hold off, check eBay, or spend more money and get the `full sized' model. I can't say if the full size unit will improve all of the problems addressed above, except for one: In being `actual size', you know that at the very least you'll get a lamp big enough to display in your front window of your home so every one can see.

Not what I expected...,
This review is from: A Christmas Story Movie Official Table Leg Lamp
This is definitely a cute lamp, but I was a bit disappointed with the size. I was ok with it being 20 inches tall, but I expected the leg part to be a little smaller than a human leg (which is how it appears on the box) - instead it's actually only a litle bigger than a Barbie doll leg, which is not exactly something that can be proudly displayed in a window, nor do I feel that it was worth the amount being charged. The lamp works fine, and we have decided to keep it despite the size. The other reviewer is absolutely right in saying that there was no contact information for the company on or in the box. If we wanted to return it we would have no idea how to do so.

Cute little lamp, works well with low watt party bulbs,

I am going to review the lamp itself and not the amazon services or therein. This lamp was given to me as a gift and I believe it was purchased at a local RiteAid/Walgreens around Christmas time last year. I have never seen the movie "A Christmas Story", so I can't judge how good of a replica it is. Ever since I've seen this lamp in a circular ad, I was charmed by it and have wanted one for years, so I was delighted to receive this as a gift.
The biggest problem I had was finding a lightbulb that didn't make the lamp extremely hot within a few minutes. I planned to use this often as an actual lamp and even when using 40-45 watt bulbs had the heat problem. After several runs to the hardware store, I found a wonderful solution. They're called Philips Party and Deco bulbs and are 25w. Even after a few hours the lamp does not heat up. They come in a few different colors and I use the yellow one because it gives off the best light. I did have the red one blow out when turning on the lamp, but that was the only bulb that did. So I assume that it was the bulb itself and not the lamp. I don't use the light inside the leg often because I think it may have the heat problem and replacing that bulb requires taking apart the lamp. In regards to the light inside the leg, the box my lamp came in DID come with instructions on how to replace it. I haven't tried taking the leg apart but have kept the instructions just in case. The power cord is a decent length; not too short that the lamp is difficult to place, but not long enough to stretch across a room or along a wall. The switch is easy to turn and click through the different settings (I've had some lamps that had stiff switches and were a pain to turn so this is nice). The shade does a good job of softening light as well. Removing and replacing the shade is easy. Though the way the shade is designed, you can't use the curly-q energy saving lightbulbs with it (not even the smallest size). Overall this is a nice bedside lamp. I like using it at night when I don't want the ceiling light on. Other than the lightbulb fiasco in the beginning, I've had no problems with it.

I purchased this lamp to provide extra light in my motorhome. Since most motorhomes are decorated with fabric recovered from the 1920's, this seemed to fit right in, and it does. If you own a sofa covered in huge flowers, this would make an excellent table lamp.
On a serious note, it is sturdy and has a three way switch that lights the bulb only, leg only and both at the same time. The leg only actually makes an excellent night light. This unit is 20" high, but I understand that the manufacturer also makes one twice that high, which I would love to order to place on the end of my bar at home. I wouldn't call this lamp a toy, but I don't know how else one would classify it.

Very cute lamp it's just like the movie just WAY smaller. Very cool. BUT It was a gift to my husband for Christmas, when the box(not the actually leg lamp box) it said "LEG LAMP" on the outside of the shipping box... My husband happened to be home and called and said thanks for the leg lamp. Total disapointment, it was something he wasn't expecting and was totally excited to surprise him. Bummer.

My son purchased this lamp for his Dad for Christmas. It came well packaged and was not damaged at all. The only issue I have with it is that the shade doesn't clear quite enough room for a regular sized light bulb which makes the shade sit slightly off center. It takes a regular 40 watt bulb, but I'm going to check to see if I can find a smaller bulb with the same size base. It came with instructions on how to replace the bulb in the leg and it requires taking the lamp apart which looks a little more in-depth than what I like, but hopefully it won't be too bad. Overall, this lamp is cute and makes for fun conversation.
