Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Mallery's second Christmas novel set in the small eastern California town of Fool's Gold (after 2012's A Fool's Gold Christmas) pairs up Dr. Gabriel Boylan, an Army physician with tours of Iraq and Afghanistan under his belt, and Noelle Perkins, a lawyer turned Christmas store owner who has suffered tragedies of her own. Having seen countless catastrophes—including the death of someone very close to him—Gabriel is loath to give his heart, no matter how appealing the tall blonde might be. Noelle has chosen the opposite path: she is going to live every single day to the fullest, no matter what. After being stuck in a snowstorm together, Noelle knows what she wants from Gabriel, but she's not going to settle for anything less than mutual true love. Fans of the Fool's Gold series will enjoy this Christmas interlude. (Oct.)

More About the Author

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Susan Mallery has entertained millions of readers with her witty and emotional stories about women and the relationships that define their lives. She has published more than 100 romance and women's fiction novels, beginning with two books the same month when she was just out of college. Her books have spent more than 120 weeks on the USA Today bestsellers list and have reached as high as #2 on the New York Times bestsellers list, statistically tied for #1 (THREE LITTLE WORDS, a Fool's Gold romance). Known for her keen insight into human nature and her humorous take on life, Susan Mallery has been described by RT Book Reviews as "in a class by herself!" and was featured as a Red Hot Read in Cosmopolitan Magazine. In 2013, four of her books were named to Amazon's "Best Book of the Month" list.

With a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Susan is one of the few writers who can understand her royalty statement. She went on to get a Masters in Writing Popular Fiction and has extensively studied story structure in screenwriting courses, though she has no plans to write for the screen. Her goal, always, is to give readers a story that will move them, populated with characters who feel like real people.

Booklist says, "Novels don't get much better than Mallery's expert blend of emotional nuance, humor, and superb storytelling," and Publisher's Weekly calls her prose "luscious and provocative." Susan appreciates critical praise, but she values praise from her readers even more. She credits her successful career to the loyal readers who rush out to buy each new book on the day it's released.

With the advent of ebooks, Susan's career has soared even higher, and her books make regular appearances on both print and ebook bestsellers lists. She has embraced the Digital Age with a robust website (www.susanmallery.com), an active presence on Facebook (www.facebook.com/susanmallery) and a free Susan Mallery app for the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices (www.mobileroadie.com/apps/susanmallery). At www.foolsgoldca.com, she also provides bonus content such as after-the-happily-ever-after updates for the Fool's Gold romances, her most popular ongoing series.

Born and raised in California, Susan lives with her family in Seattle, where she survives the dreary days of winter with the help of a "happy lamp" and plenty of coffee.

I love Christmas and I love this Christmas Story! I love reading books in a series. You invest so much in the characters' lives. Noelle is a strong women surprisingly after all she has been through. She doesn't give up but starts over. She meets Gabriel, a soldier that has been wounded and is recovering. I like that Susan Mallery intertwines all the people in Fool's Gold. They all seem to care about each other. When it seems Gabriel and Noelle seem to have given up on the happily ever after, Noelle's girlfriends are there to cheer her up. I have a group of friends that are there to support me no matter what. It just makes the story seem so real. I am never disappointed in Susan Mallery's books! I am always happy at the end of the book. She is very talented in telling a story that keeps you interested throughout the book! Read the story I know you will love it!

I am a huge Fool's Gold fan and have read them all the day they came out. While the story of Noelle and Gabrielle is a cute story about second chances, I just found it too short and rushed especially for the price. It was nice to finally get Noelle's backstory but I find it strange she has never told her supposed best friends anything about her past or illness. It was interesting to read about what soldiers experience through Gabriel. But it just seemed like their meeting was disjointed and the relationship rushed. Maybe I'm just tired of the formulaic relationships in these books. Girl wants to get married and meets hot guy with committment issues. Hooks up anyway. Guy freaks out and leaves girl broken hearted. Que the friends coming over. Guy realizes he's an idiot and runs back to beg forgiveness. Rinse and repeat over and over. I really hope the next trilogy offers something different.

Susan Mallery has a unique way of weaving a love story into the heart of a town. Every time I return to Fool's Gold, I am amazed by how captivating the town and the people are. I want to live there! Noelle is a sweetheart who has kept most of her past hidden and it was heartbreaking to read what she had gone through. Gabriel has been estranged from his family and returns home begrudgingly to heal. Love love love their story! A perfect holiday read! Highly recommend this book!

Susan Mallery has once again capture in a most creative way the true Christmas spirit in Fool's Gold! Noelle Perkins came to town by randomly choosing on the map is the owner of her new business she opened The Christmas Attic and very much a part of the town already! Gabriel Boylan, trauma doctor in the service & twin of Gideon Boylan, sexy man of the radio. Gabriel comes in for the holiday as a vacation of sorts to recover from an injury to his hand & a plea from his family for them all to unite, thinking sleep and healing. Noelle & Gabriel meet unexpectedly when she goes to take care of her friend Felicia's dog, nearly fainting at the sight of blood from the injury on his hand while wondering who & why this attractive man is in her friend's house. Gabriel ends up helping Noelle out in the store to keep him from the unwanted encounters of family, questions and being...alone. As three weddings are being planned and Noelle is to stand up with them, she wonders and starts to feel and hope that she too can be happy and not be alone as her and Gabriel find their own way to being happy in a town that is always there for everyone. Read to find out if the true spirit of the holiday seasons is as magically drawing you to Fool's Gold as it did me! Love it!

I like Susan Mallery but this series is getting ridiculous. It's the exact same thing every time! Guy meets girl and they like each other. Guy is afraid of commitment and runs away at the last minute only to come back in the end. Doesn't Susan Mallery know there are other ways to create conflict that ends happily? It not just the usual romance formula that bothers me. In every single book all the women of the town come over with drinks and food to comfort the dumped girl. I mean I'm all for your friends being there for you but Ms Mallery doesn't even have to write this part anymore. All she has to do is swap the name out! The scene at the cabin was so silly. There's a cabin in the woods that the town owns with electricity, homemade casseroles in the freeze and let's not forget the condoms that the town supplies! REALLY.
I only tried another fools gold installment because it was set at Christmas time and I was in the mood for a holiday romance. I really didn't get a great holiday feel from this book. Yes, the main character own's a Christmas store but it just didn't give me that warm and cozy holiday feel.
I really think its time to move on from fools gold and for Ms Mallery to write an original book.
Sadly over this series.

The book started off strong and had me enthralled until the last page. I love a book where I truly like the main characters, and this was the case. There were some holiday shenanigans, difficult parents, an over exuberant puppy, several kittens and cats, and the usual Fool's Gold characters, including Mayor Marsha who definitely has special abilities....in my opinion anyway. Secrets that had you wondering almost all the way through and a truly satisfying ending make for an enjoyable read.
