Book Description

October 17, 2008
These days, Christmas lights adorn front porches before the Thanksgiving turkey is even in the oven. Plane tickets to visit hardly-missed relatives cost more than the suitcase full of presents people have to lug across the country. And radios everywhere play songs about that fat guy in a red suit on an endless loop. Yes, it?s official: Christmas Sucks. This title is a humorous look at America?s commercialization of the Christmas holiday season and the terrible travel, inordinate amount of preparation, and family strife that accompanies it. You can commiserate with the fact that everyone drives themselves into debt buying gifts, no one enjoys seeing long-lost relatives, and everyone is creeped out by the department store Santa. With twelve days of Christmas, there?s plenty of reasons why this is far from the most wonderful time of the year.

More About the Author

I never planned on being an author. When I was pregnant, I was amazed that there wasn't a book out there that warned women how difficult the path to procreation could be. So I wrote one myself, sent it out to a handful of publishers and was lucky enough to get it published! It became a hit and led to this series of Sucks books that help readers get through some of the sucky sides of life. So far, twelve books and counting! Not only is it rewarding to write books, but it allows me to be a stay-at-home mom which is the most rewarding, albeit sometimes suckiest, job of all.

2.0 out of 5 stars Christmas, December 26, 2009

This review is from: Christmas Sucks: What to Do When Fruitcake, Family, and Finding the Perfect Gift Make You Miserable (Paperback)
I expected more from this book. I expected more humor, more insight. The book did not deliver. I have no issue with the basic premise and no religious convictions that would have me biased against the nature of the book.

Christmas, of course, brings lots of pleasure to many people. As the book promises, Christmas has a lot of downsides. I assumed that the book would deliver a polemic on those downsides, with a lot of humor thrown in. I expected something along the lines of the Erma Bombeck books.

Save your money. I suspect that there are similar books on the subject of Christmas and the hassles one has to face in celebrating the Christmas season. If the subject interests you, you might search the internet for alternative reading. There are movies on this same subject that would deliver more than this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what you think, December 14, 2009
By
This review is from: Christmas Sucks: What to Do When Fruitcake, Family, and Finding the Perfect Gift Make You Miserable (Paperback)
The title makes this sound like a Christmas bashing book but it is far from it. Gives great tips, advice and ideas for making your holiday season less frantic and stressful and much more relaxed and worry-free.

5.0 out of 5 stars funny book, May 19, 2009
This review is from: Christmas Sucks: What to Do When Fruitcake, Family, and Finding the Perfect Gift Make You Miserable (Paperback)
I bought this book to calm my nerves on a flight to Disneyworld in January. It worked! It was funny and although I don't hate Christmas anymore since my daughter was born (but am now scared of flying), I felt frazzled from a hectic holiday season. The book made me laugh as some of the situations were even worse than mine. Well-written and enjoyable read.
