Ages 5-8. Chabelita has to stay with her grandparents while her mother goes to the city to teach. One day, Chabelita receives a package from her mother, a lovely red dress that she wears on the first day of school. When her mother comes home for a visit, she teaches Chabelita a poem, "
Caperucita Roja," about Little Red Riding Hood, which Chabelita goes on to recite at a school pageant. The endnote informs readers that this story is based on the childhood of the author, who grew up in Panama (though the country is never named in the text). The problem here is too much reminiscence, not enough real story. Still, the artwork, with its bright colors and evocative scenes, makes this worth a look for libraries wanting books with a Latin American setting and flavor.
