Book Description

4 and upP and up
A poor West Indian boy, Anselm, wants nothing so much as an evergreen Christmas tree to celebrate Christmas, until Miss Mary, Anselm's neighbor, points out that the West Indies have their own kind of Christmas trees: the poinsettia.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Holiday celebrations in the Caribbean must differ from those in the North because of the tropical climate. In this charming story, Vashanti Rahaman tells how Anslem finds a way to mark the season, even when all the firs are dry and losing their needles. Frane Lessac's beguiling illustrations relate the island's celebrations and feature especially enchanting pictures of poinsettas.

From Publishers Weekly

His home in the West Indies is about as far from a white Christmas as you can get, but young Anslem still longs for snow and an evergreen tree to decorate: "All this thing we does sing about in Christmas carol, I never hope to see that," he thinks disconsolately. Eventually, the island atmosphere, with its unique smells of fresh ginger beer and smoked ham over the fire, convinces Anslem that there's more to a holiday celebration than having a tree and building a snowman. In her ambient text and in an enlightening endnote, Rahaman shares Christmas customs, Caribbean style. Lessac's (Not a Copper Penny in Me House) accomplished gouache artwork bursts with splashes of red poinsettia and showcases breezy island backgrounds. Ages 4-8.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas with a difference, October 4, 2002

This review is from: O Christmas Tree (Hardcover)
O Christmas Tree, is a clebration of West Indian Christmas traditions. A warm and funny tale. A superbly crafted story. Anslem's attempts, to repair his withered pine tree from abroad are a hoot. Christmas is a time of yearnings and secret wishes and children will readily identify with Anslem's yearning for something he thinks is truely special. A must for every Caribbean family tired of commercial, foriegn, images of Santas, reindeer and snowmen. This is already a Christmas classic in my home.
