Editorial Reviews

Probally no time of the year carries with it a feeling of greater personal satisfaction and joy then does the season of Christmas. And probaly no one single factor characterizes the Christmas Season. The sound of jingle bells, carol singers and hymn-playing church bells all add to the festive season creating universal joy and happiness. we take pleasure in presenting this recording of some of the greatest assembled on one record. And to add further to the impact of this already cjoice selection of music, the great voice of Patti Page, America;s number one female singer is featured. No other singer today could give these songs the tender, warm, and sincere feeling they deserve. This collection of songs represents the sacred and traditional as well as the mythical side of the yuletide season as presented by Patti Page. The CD bonus track, "Boogie Woogie Santa Clause" was originally the A side to "Tennessee Waltz" which has sold over 10 million copies - the second best seller single (outsold only by Bing Crosby's White Christmas) even into the 1990s Released in 1955 Christmas with Patti Page is truly a recording that deserves a cherished place among your most treasured recorded possessions. --- Liner notes exerted from the original LP release

I listened to this growing up. I still have the album - scratches and all. The first song is broken off.I have been trying for years to find another. I was overwhelmed to find it on Amazon and on a CD. Now I can share it with my child and think of what Christmas used to be with my family.

This CD will give you an idea of what Christmas sounded like on the radio in the 50s. Yes, you couldn't get away from Bing with White Christmas or Gene with Rudolph but you heard many other great recordings on the radio and these were some of the most played. This album was originally released Christmas 1951 as a 10" lp (8 songs) and became a full length 12" LP in 1955. The CD you are now looking at not only includes the entire 1955 LP but the bonus cut BOOGIE WOOGIE SANTA CLAUS from 1950 which was the A side of the TENNESSEE WALTZ. Until the release of this CD you could only find Boogie Woogie Santa on the original 45 or 78 or on the Christmas 78 later released. Patti gives great readings of WHITE CHRISTMAS, THE CHRISTMAS SONG and some of her original 50s Christmas singles including PRETTY SNOWFLAKES, CHRISTMAS BELLS and the biggest hit on the CD, THE MAMA DOLL SONG.

This was the original album (CD version) that I grew up with! This red colored cover CD is NOT like the green covered version with the same name (DO NOT GET THAT GREEN COVERED ONE - YOU WILL BE DISSAPOINTED!). This red one is not in print anymore, and you need to wait for a collector to sell it, and it is not usually cheap! I tried every google site out there, and could not come up with it, until this one showed up.

Also, if you decide to download it from Amazon.com, be SURE to listen to the sample tracks first -- I found that the downloaded version is NOT the same as the original = it is unfortunately the green covered album (NO good). Also, I tried some of the downloading sites, and got a virus (it took half a day to clean it out of the PC). It is VERY difficult to find this CD, in the 1953 version, but keep looking = eventually it will pop up!

Two-three songs aside, this is really a great 5 star christmas album from the mid-1950's I believe.

The sound is mono but this helps to create the old christmas sound of yesteryear. Along with PATTI'S great singing, there is a great orchestra throughout which can vary from a swinging, brassy big band sound to a very powerdful and lush sound with lots of string such as violins. There is also a children's chorus in a couple of songs and an adult chorus in a couple of songs. The adult chorus is great but the children's chorus isn't always strong in the style this album is generally working in.

JINGLE BELLS starts us off and is quite possibly the best song on the album. Musically, it's pretty different and unique from the normal musical backing takes of this song as it has a really upbeat, perhaps swinging style to it. And while PATTI'S voice doesn't offer anything new from other female singers of the same style, it is still very nice and equal with the best female 'crooner type' singers and blends in perfectly with the music. I like this version so much because of the unique musical backing that I will go as far as saying that this version is one of my favorite versions of JINGLE BELLS of all-time.

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN has a real nice big band type style to it and is kinda a unique version due to the music just as in JINGLE BELLS above.

Other great songs are SILVER BELLS, WHITE CHRISTMAS, THE CHRISTMAS SONG, SILENT NIGHT, etc....

Ken01 is exactly right. The original, clever songs people are looking for are only on the red cover album. Be sure to look at the song list before you buy!

This album has such history with my family/childhood. Too much to mention here. As much as I love her more current Christmas releases, none is so dear to me as this one. I wish they'd release it as a CD. Anyone out there listening?

Wish this 1955 Christmas album would be released on a CD, and INCLUDE the 1960 Christmas sone "LITTLE DONKEY". Little Donkey was the flip side of Patti's 45 rpm recording of "THE SOUND OF MUSIC". 5 STARS for this GEM.
