Most Helpful Customer Reviews

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful By Morten Fuglestad on November 20, 2010
Graupner's (1683-1760) music is full of surprises, and this is one of the best recordings I've come across (I own a dozen CD's with works of Christoph Graupner). Nova Stravaganza and Siegbert Rampe (leading from the harpsichord) has a fresh approach to this music, and their attention to both pitch and articulation is astonishing. The playing and the compositions are both very engaging. Graupner displays a total command of the possibilities of the baroque orchestra. The compositions are colorfull and full of "affetti". The style is never naive or sentimental, but always full of ambiguity, and never shallow. Graupner is one of those composers who always finds catchy tunes, and I think he is one of the most underrated of composers of the whole baroque era.

His style is quite learned and his fugues (i.e. the second movement of the e-minor-concerto for two flutes and strings and BC) are on par with those of Handel and Fasch. One of the most interesting works is the concerto in D with 2 horns and 2 flutes and orchestra - an extremely engaging study of the representation of princely power in art.

This recording is recommended on all accounts together with the vol 2 of DG's Graupner Orchestral works!
