Editorial Reviews

Thomas Beaton, Educator

A wonderful show from beginning to end. It completely disperses all the myths about Columbus. A revealing film!

Product Description

We produced a film about Christopher Columbus by studying the writings of four people who actually knew him. One writer was his own son, Ferdinand, (who sailed with his father to the New World) who was to become one of the most renowned scholars in Europe with over 15,000 books in his private collection. Bartolome de Las Casas not only talked with Columbus at court but he studied his log. This period of human acitivity in the 15th century is probably the fullest period of human drama and adventure (except for the period of which we are involved at the present time)! This video will show you the story of Columbus and his movements in chronological order as it was filmed on the exact locations where Columbus walked. We wholeheartedly recommend that people read books about Columbus, especially "Admiral of the Ocean Sea" by Samuel Elliot Morison and "Columbus" by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto. Our video will show an abundance of the sights of Columbus that are found in! those books. Every cultured American should do this without fail.

This review is from: Christopher Columbus/The Discovery of the New World [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Columbus' exploration of the Americas comes to life... The filmmaker clearly admires the "Admiral of the Ocean Sea," lending a passion and energy to the film that holds the attention. Educated people can disagree about Columbus and his impact good or bad on the peoples of the New World, but the historical fact of his 4 voyages remains--it is the starting point from which discussion must begin. At 90 minutes or so the video is excellent for classroom use--the conscientious educator (using various other materials and sources) can then challenge students to confront the greater issues and think for themselves about the effects of European colonialism upon what we would later come to know as the Third World. Obviously this finds renewed relevancy in the economic globalization of the modern world--an extremely urgent issue of immense importance.
