5.0 out of 5 stars Eidelman's finest work is a wonderful epic score
Orchestral scores of this quality are few and far between these days. Eidelman's score has power, majesty and sensitivity expertly interwoven, without resorting to the dreaded, monotonous synth tones that all to often pass as dramatic music. This will appeal to admirers of Delerue, Friedhofer and Rozsa far more than fans of, say, Zimmer. It is refined but never short of...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Discovery For Sure
After listening to "Christopher Columbus: The Discovery", I discovered something about Cliff Eidelman about the way he writes epic music. As well as in "Star Trek VI-The Undiscovered Country", Eidelman begins using his orchestra in full to state the theme for the main character -in this case, Columbus. However, in the middle of the statement,...

It is refined but never short of colorful orchestral flourishes and is rich in drama.
It would be a mistake to disregard this score due to the poor quality of the film itself. The music is an enthralling listen in its own right.
The CD has excellent sound and deserves maximum marks for presenting an outstanding score by a much underestimated and extremely skilled composer.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Discovery For Sure, August 27, 2000
This review is from: Christopher Columbus: The Discovery - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
However, in the middle of the statement, the orchestra calms down, leaving the listener wondering why he/she wouldn't continue playing the theme with the full orchestra. What I say is clearly demonstrated on 'A Hero's Welcome (Epilogue)'. The main themes for this awful movie are very good, but Eidelman never lets the music speak the heroics of Christopher Columbus at full as in any epic music such as "Star Wars" and "Superman-The Movie".

I bought this CD but it does not seem to be the version played by Capt. Uli. Can anyone tell me what version he uses? Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Christopher Columbus Discovery, April 13, 2000
This review is from: Christopher Columbus: The Discovery - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
We took a new and different vacation this spring. It was our so to speak Discovery. We decided that the huge and laborsome cruise lines offered many slack-jawed Miami women and men who had raw hands from pulling slot machines...and disembarked at ports...and really had no idea where they were, they just waddled off to go shop. I wanted more...I wanted to visit our roots, but in some comfort. We decided on a VOYAGE of DISCOVERY... I found STARCLIPPER cruise line in a brochure...this is the Mikael and Ann Kraft Owned fleet..soon to be 3 ships that visits the Golden Age of Clipper Ships...and what a Voyage it was! Every night the sails abounded in thier glory, and Captain Uli Pruesse played the soundtract from Columbus Discovery on the PA...and talked motivational and stirring trivia about sailing and leaving your worries behind..."find every ripple in the seas, and forget the hectic life behind...This is it! This is it! You are sailing now..." It ran goose bumps and brought tears to the strong... Thus my review is carrying baggage of the perfect sailing voyage..StarClipper...and its elegant Clipper Class visit to the days of mega-comfort class sailing...and Uli Pruesse brought a child back to my thoughts...a child I am glad is still alive! The music Columbus Discovery fit well! I will always associate the music with sunsets on golden seas and this German born motivational seaman...Captain Uli!

2.0 out of 5 stars The best thing in the movie... it's not saying much., September 21, 1999

Christopher Columbus: The Discovery was one of the biggest movie disasters in recent years and pretty much everything about it was terrible. But at least Cliff Eidelman's music score was fairly decent. It's not brilliant, certainly not a patch on Vangelis' score for 1492: Conquest of Paradise or the works of James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams, but its not bad either. It should have been much exerberant and exicting, really but it's worth listening too while your doing homework or household jobs because its quite smooth and relaxing, if unmemorable.
