5.0 out of 5 stars Classic! One of the 80's must haves!
This album is a flashback of the time when music was still produced and engineered by humans and not computers. When sound, vocals, and music were all important in a great recording. Where special sound effects and recording techniques were creative, difficult, and time consuming.

3.0 out of 5 stars An album of its time, but not for today
Okay, I said when I originally wrote this review that I'd give this album another chance. On further listening, maybe 2 stars in the original was a bit harsh: I listened to it before in the car and the album is a little quiet, which meant some of the melodies were harder to hear. But honestly, the stand-out tracks remain Sailing and Ride Like The Wind. Some of the other...

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic! One of the 80's must haves!, December 2, 2010
This review is from: Christopher Cross (Audio CD)
This album is a flashback of the time when music was still produced and engineered by humans and not computers. When sound, vocals, and music were all important in a great recording. Where special sound effects and recording techniques were creative, difficult, and time consuming.
Nice arrangements and great musicians. Michael McDonald fits in as perfectly here as he ever did with Steely Dan or the Doobie Brothers. Nice jazz feel throughout the album. "Ride Like the Wind" is one of those songs you really don't hear on the radio unless you have a Smooth Jazz station in your area. Also nice guitar playing by Jazz legend Larry Carlton.
"Never Be the Same" is another classic that brings back memories.
It was nice to have something different at this time period after disco and punk nearly destroyed everything. Gone were most of the greatest Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion bands that were and are still my favorites. Only a few survived. This album was really different in it's day and still sounds fresh and original.
One of those unique albums that really cant be compared to anything else.
Stands the test of time!

Listening to this CD brought back many fond memories of my youth when I enjoyed it then! My favorite all time track on this album will always be "Sailing". If you loved this song you may also like his other tracks too.

I bought the original vinyl back in 1979 and was genuinely blown away. After not hearing it for 15 years, and after a recent listen, I was blown away again. What a great 1st album this was for Christopher Cross. He garnered several Grammy awards from this album and was well on his way to becoming the next new sensation....well that never happened.
The album is still a maserpiece, and belongs in everybody's collection!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can Still Remeber When It Won The Album Of The Year Grammy!, September 16, 2011

Gosh, this is one beautiful CD. It sounds as heavenly to me now as it did then. It was re-issued with all of it's music resonating exactly where it's supposed to. Ah...sailing...takes me away to where I've always heard it could be...just a dream and the wind to carry...and soon I will be free. I'm happy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Kid Of The Eighties !!!, July 10, 2011

I remember when this album hit the stores. It was a sell out, and it was awhile before i got my copy. I've never seen this guy before, but i do remember hearing the Arthur Theme on the radio. And it was a smash for Christopher Cross , and he won a lot of Grammys for the album doing that time. But i love this album , Mostly all the songs were hits. I bought this cd because i have it on vinyl and needed a cd copy because i truly love this album. I became a "CC" fan after this album....and it's a keeper.

4.0 out of 5 stars GRAMMY GOLD, November 22, 2011
This review is from: Christopher Cross (Audio CD)
Christopher Cross stormed onto the musical scene in 1979 with this debut album, garnering 4 Top 40 hits and 4 big Grammy awards. After that, he managed only one more smash--the Oscar winning theme from "Arthur."
SAILING and RIDE LIKE THE WIND are two great songs and have stood the test of time. The other tracks are good pop tunes and Cross has an A-list of background vocalists including Michael McDonald, Valerie Carter, Don Henley and JD Souther, and quality studio musicians.
I enjoy this album but its not a regular on my playlist, but still has merit in the transitional move from disco to melodic music.

I was amazed at the excellent condition the CD was in, especially since it's music from my distant past. I will return for other items from time to time.

3.0 out of 5 stars An album of its time, but not for today, March 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Christopher Cross (Audio CD)
Okay, I said when I originally wrote this review that I'd give this album another chance. On further listening, maybe 2 stars in the original was a bit harsh: I listened to it before in the car and the album is a little quiet, which meant some of the melodies were harder to hear. But honestly, the stand-out tracks remain Sailing and Ride Like The Wind. Some of the other material is pleasant but no longer as enticing as on the the album's release. And that was my point, hence the title of my review: the material has now dated. If this album means a lot to you, because it holds memories for you or you're just feeling nostalgic, fine. But for anyone else looking for some soft rock or pop - I guess Chris Cross fitted into the adult oriented rock category - there is better material from around that time (Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, say) and other more current material today. I've left my my original words intact in the next paragraph.

Amazon wanted me to review this purchase, so here I am, looking at the other reviews and wondering if they and I have listened to the same album. Cross's debut release in 1979 was a huge hit and won 5 Grammy's besides. I didn't buy the album then, but I always liked Sailing and Ride Like the Wind - and a friend of mine likes it hugely; I've heard the album through in the past, but over 20 years ago. Just recently I couldn't get Ride Like the Wind out of my head, so I bought this album. This isn't the sort of stuff I normally listen to, which my wife tolerates when I inflict it on her in the car. But when we both listened to this recently, she was moved to say it was rubbish. I'll be a little more generous and say that the album has not aged well. Yes, the tracks I bought the album for I still really enjoy. But frankly, if it wasn't for those, this album would be a 1-star review: I can't think of an occasion when I'd want to play the whole thing through again - though out of respect for my co-reviewers and their rave reviews, I'll give it another listen and adjust my review if I think differently the second time through.
