My Dad brought me to see Christy Ring play about 1953, in Buttevant. The pitch was once the parade ground of a British army barracks. Then Ican recall the dramatic broadcasts on radio in the late fifties, the period of the great rivalry between Cork and Wexford in hurling. Having forgotten most of the results of the great matches I read this book with often the suspense of not knowing for example whether Cork won the All Ireland in 1954 which would give Christy his record eighth medal. Unfortunately Horgan has a habit of heralding a chapter of a year’s hurling with the results! This is in fact my one and only grouch – this is as good a book as you could imagine as an account of the life of a great sportsman. By the time I had read as far as 1956 I was beginning to wonder what kept Christy and the other great hurlers going so hard at this game year after year, and came up with the conclusion that it was because they were like great musicians or artists. Hurling I confirmed for myself is the greatest sport of all, maybe with cycling, having more or less concluded this anyway from my youth – ice hockey faster for example? Yeah but only over little lengths in two dimensions! Which makes Christy Ring the greatest of them all in them all.
