About the Author

Catherine Marshall began her writing career as a single mother, after the untimely death of her husband in 1949. She went on to write more than 20 books. Catherine's greatest success was her 1967 novel, Christy, inspired by the story of her mother, which spawned a television series, a youth book series, and a made-for-television movie.  Catherine Marshall passed away in March 1983.

Written by C. Archer, this book is sixth in a series loosely based on Catherine Marshalls Christy. Although failing to live up to its origins this book is entertaining for its target audience. Christy returns to her home town with a student in need of an operation. She meets an old flame and faces the dilemma of remaining or returning to Cutter Gap. Her two rural flames, David and Neil, accompany her as well, making for an exciting time.
Although aimed at preteen girls this book falls short in the area of characterisation. As much as you would love to get into the angst of Christy having to choose between three men there is never any doubt that she will choose the higher calling and return to her poor mountain people. There is also a poor bridge between the previous book and this one in her relationship with David. Its almost like the proposal never happened because the characters dont fill out emotionally.
All in all, a quick moral read for young girls.

Some may wish to critique the Christy Series books to find their flaws, but if they will think about the motives and actions of actually living the Christian faith, they will find a treasure trove of guiding principles and how to follow them.

In CHRISTY'S CHOICE, One of the characters, Ruby Mae, discovers that whether comfortably situated, like the folks in Ashville, or in abject poverty, like the people in Cutter Gap, "folks are just folks." Being naturally out-going she finds no difficulty in relating to either strata of society.

Christy, on the other hand, finds herself torn between staying near home and beginning a school for the poor children of her home town, or returning to Cutter Gap with its filth, abject poverty, moonshine, feuds and violence. Which will she choose?

This is a captivating story of following one's heart, based on Catherine Marshall's mother's experience in the Great Smokies.

I have been a Christy fan for some time and I was hoping that this book would be more about "David or Neil" but the book leaned more toward "Ashville or Cutter Gap". However this was still a great and exciting book in all respects and I recommend it highly.
