Book Description

December 6, 2011 3869303115 978-3869303116
William Eggleston's standing as one of the masters of colour photography is widely acknowledged. But the gradual steps by which he transformed from an unknown into a leading artist are less well known. Steidl has undertaken to trace these steps in an ambitious series of publications. Before Color (Steidl, 2010) explored Eggleston's revelatory early black and white images, while Chromes is an edit of more than 5,000 Kodachromes and Ektachromes taken from ten chronologically ordered binders found in a safe in the Eggleston Artistc Trust. This archive had once been used by John Szarkowski who selected the forty-eight images printed in Eggleston's seminal book William Eggleston's Guide, while the rest of the archive has remained almost entirely unpublished. This book presents Eggleston's early Memphis imagery, his testing of colour and compositional strategies, and the development towards the 'poetic snapshot'. In short, Chromes shows a master in the making.

5.0 out of 5 stars William Eggleston Chromes January 16, 2012
By Buffy
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's only January 2012 as I'm writing this review and I'm sure this will be on my top 10 list of art/photo books of the year. For Eggleston fans this is a treasure trove of "Guide" era images filled with full-color imagery. Where the "Guide" comes in at 112 pages this slipcased set of three books is a massive 728 pages. The printing is excellent and the format is a large 16 x 17 inches. Yes, not a typo, 16 x 17 inches. This is like owning a huge portfolio of Eggleston prints to enjoy in your own home. While I love the Guide facsimile edition being able to see Eggleston's images produced in this large format is a real treat. If you love Eggleston's photography this is easily the best publication since Eggleston's Guide and highly recommended. Is it worth the price? Yes! Five stars all the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and terrific January 18, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm still working my way through this massive and beautiful 3-book set, but my initial impression is not only does it present a staggering number of images--most of which are previously unseen by the public, but that the printing and reproduction quality are first-rate. even at the $250 I paid as a pre-order, it's still very pricey. and it seems likely, given purchase price and what I'm guessing are limited runs, to go out of print quickly. so, if you're an Eggleston fan looking for "new" images and can afford it, I'd recommend it highly.

one minor disappointment, though, is the number of photos previously published in the "Democratic Camera" catalog as well as in, I believe, "Ancient & Modern" and "Faulkner's Mississippi." knowing the book represents a selection from 5k images, I'd have preferred to have all unpublished photos, but a minor quibble--I'm just happy to be able to see pictures.

here's hoping Steidl next publishes the photos from Eggleston's '76 trip to Plains, Georgia. last I'd heard they and the Trust were discussing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best photo book(s) I've ever seen August 24, 2012
By Geoff
Format:Hardcover
I have several art photo books. I'll also admit I'm a big Eggleston fan. This series is far and away the very best Eggleston collection put into print. Just the quality of the books and prints is enough to give it the highest rating. The books are large but not too large and the images are big enough to really appreciate. The curation of the images is also very good. There are some repeats seen in other books but the images in Chromes are much higher quality. Every page is a treat. It's like having a couple hundred prints of the original images. Yes it's that good.
