5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific resource!, September 26, 2005
This review is from: Chronic Pain: A Primary Care Guide to Practical Management (Current Clinical Practice) (Hardcover)
It was wonderful to see this book come into print. It has proved to be an invaluable resource to me when confronted with the weekly patient that just does not quite fit the mold. This series has a goal of providing practical approaches to common problems. This book fits perfectly into that niche.
It is insightful and has distilled the diagnosis and treatment of common pain complaints into practical, relevent and easily applicable information for the busy practitioner. From Chapter one discussing the epidemiology of chronic pain to Chapter 3 on the pathogenesis of chronic pain this book acts as a succinct and knowledgeable colleague to assist the primary care practitioner in their management of the chronic pain patient.
The book is divided into six sections: Introduction (Chapters 1 and 2), Pathogenesis (Chapter 3), Common Chronic Pain Conditions (Chapters 4-10), Special Groups (Chapters 11-14), Comorbid Conditions (Chapters 15 and 16) and finally a section on Opioids. Further, there are wonderful patient education materials included in the appenidices as well as additional materials that most practitioners will find extremely practical (e.g., a treatment table for the management of headache in Appendix E).
If this were not enough, there is an ebook included with the hard copy that allows one to place the book on their laptop or PDA if so desired. This is truly extraordinary for a book of this type. This allows for the marvelous recommendations and treatment algorithms to be brought truly right to the patient whether that be outpatient or inpatient. I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful text and urge anyone in primary care with chronic pain patients to at least take a look at this text. It is the sine quo non of readily applicable evidence based medicine.
