Editorial Reviews

Review

"Danea Horn has put an honest and wise voice to the intimate journey of illness. She lights a fire for self-compassion and puts stress in its place, while providing empowering suggestions for living with grace and Chronic Resilience. I highly recommend this groundbreaking book." -Kris Carr, New York Times bestselling author of Crazy Sexy Diet

"I highly recommend Chronic Resilience, not only to those who suffer from chronic illness but to those who love them. Danea Horn promises that her book will help the chronically ill become care givers to themselves, and she delivers - magnificently. People with chronic illness need concrete tools for learning how to live with grace and purpose despite their difficult circumstances. This book offers those tools. It describes in detail ten practical guidelines for managing the stress and challenges of illness. Exercises are included so that readers can make each guideline their own and learn to incorporate it into their everyday lives. In addition, Ms. Horn not only shares her personal experiences working with these practical tools (which feels like chatting with an old friend), but also includes intimate conversations with nine other women who suffer from chronic illness. This book will help you transform the stress of chronic illness into a life of acceptance, purpose, and gratitude. It's a gem." -Toni Bernhard, author of How to be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and their Caregivers

"Danea provides an invaluable perspective on how to be resilient when battling a chronic illness. A must read to help you navigate the emotions successfully." -Lori Hartwell, author of Chronically Happy: Joyful Living in Spite of a Chronic Illness

"I love this book. It is funny, touching, and true. Chronic Resilience is a best friend for anyone impacted by chronic illness. Intimate and authentic, tender and wise, Danea offers everyone the benefit of her courageous triumph...a life well lived...debilitating diseases be danged!" -Penelope Young Andrade, LCSW, author of Emotional Medicine Rx: Cry When You're Sad, Stop When You're Done, Feel Good Fast

More About the Author

I was born with VACTERL Association, a rare birth disorder that caused malformations in six systems in the body and left me with chronic kidney disease and other demanding health challenges. My diagnosis was described by Doctor Hardy Hendren of Boston Children's Hospital as one of "nature's worst malformations."

Through this intense journey of physical challenge and self-exploration, the message of embracing our inherent humanity emerged. My first website Creative Affirmations has inspired readers over one million times. I blog bi-weekly for Health Bistro at Lifescript. I have been featured on or written articles for: RenaLife Magazine, Goodness Magazine, Mind Body Green, Crazy Sexy Life, KevinMD.com and Good Day Sacramento. My presentation clients include the Portland Trail Blazers, the Entrepreneurs' Organization, Stanford Continuing Studies and Mary Kay.

The Best Ever (in my opinion):

* A decadent Starbucks on a cold fall morning.
* Twinkling Christmas lights.
* Hiking in the Sierra Mountains.
* Reading...reading...reading.
* Reinventing my favorite recipes as vegan.
* Dancing, usually with the iPod on and the room door shut.
* Cupcakes...my favorite way to celebrate!
* Alpacas...they look like Dr. Seuss animals. Too cute. I dream of one day owning a farm full of them.

My Promise:

I will share with you the way it is. I mean really is. Embarrassing, vulnerable honesty is always my policy.

Danea Horn has beautifully navigated the ups and downs of dealing with chronic illness and through her book she gives the roadmap to creating a resilient, enhanced and meaningful life while dealing with illness. Her book is a companion offering strategies and tips to support us in finding the positives in every situation. This isn't just a book to read once, as much as an invaluable reference manual to keep handy for support through our own ups and downs of chronic illness.

“Getting sick is your body’s way of telling you that things need to change,” writes Danea Horn, author of Chronic Resilience. No matter your present state of health (physical and/or mental) Chronic Resilience gets my vote for an incredibly helpful book, especially for women.

I read book after book about healing and the mind-body connection, and I was dismayed that I couldn’t heal myself with prayer, meditation, or diet. I misguidedly took on the burden of feeling responsible for my illness. I thought that maybe I was too negative, or karma was following me around creating pain and loss. I shamed myself for the state of my health. It wasn’t just that there was something wrong with my body, there was something wrong with me. My body didn’t work correctly, and it was my fault. Talk about a burden!

Being ill eats up your life. As our outside world flies away in faster and never-ending swoops of futile war, Ebola, climate change, and increasing power and money for the top one percent - depression, illness, futility, and not-able-to move-itus can take up residence in our hearts. Whether it’s physical or mental low-moods, we’re got to stay well and happy so we can fight back by creating health, and positive change and meaningful lives.

Chronic Resilience helps me fight back by presenting sensible ways of dealing with whatever my present state of health - physical and mental! Chronic Resilience can change your life.

I started following Danea's blog Chronic Resilience a few months ago and instantly knew I had come across something good! When I realized she had written a book, I was beyond excited for the release date. Danea offers insight and wisdom all while writing to you as a friend, full of encouragement and without judgment. I've read many books on chronic illness, but Chronic Resilience still offers a new, fresh perspective. Throughout the book there are journal exercises to help you reflect and make use of the information - I didn't complete them first time through, but I have a new notebook ready to join me on my second time through this book. Chronic Resilience left me feeling inspired to keep working on my health!

I just finished reading Chronic Resilience and I am in awe of how Danea has chosen to, not only cope with her disease, but have the strength to help others find positive ways to cope with theirs. This book is a must read for anyone not just those dealing with illness. We all have people in our lives who are going through the pain of diagnosis and treatments. Chronic Resilience teaches us about their experience and how we can support them in the way they need. There are also lessons that anyone can take to heart - know your values and live your life according to those values. There are great excersises throughout the book to help you do this. I recommend this book wholeheartedly!

I came across this book the other day and sat down and read it in one sitting! There aren't many books that talk about the WHOLE person dealing with chronic illness and that's what caught my eye. I kept reading because of the conversational tone, the wide range of information provided and the useful takeaways - focusing on what you CAN control, resetting the goal (not dumping the desire) and the info about practical aspects like you Medical Binder and Hospital Bag.

The stories from the other women were delightful in their variety and their intention to be true to themselves, no matter what.

This would be a really wonderful gift for a friend who is recently diagnosed with a Chronic Illness. It's uplifting!

From a young woman who has lived with chronic illnesses all of my life like Danea, this book felt as though I was hanging out with a lifelong best friend. As everything in life, Danea's story and this book were introduced to me at the perfect time. It is refreshing and comforting to meet someone that I can relate to and who understands what I have gone through physically and mentally along this beautiful and challenging journey. After a few pages, I knew "Chronic Resilience" was a special book that I would read time and time again. When I am in need of friendly wisdom, I will reach for "Chronic Resilience" and lean on Danea's 10 sanity-saving strategies for support and guidance through the chronic illness roller coaster ride. I am confident this book will benefit anyone at anytime during their walk of life.

My intention was to read the first three chapters and I found myself drawn to every page and could not put it down until I had finished the entire book. As someone who both lives with chronic illness as well as is the parent of someone living with chronic illness, I tend to shy away from self-help books on the subject. Chronic Resilience felt like a wise and thoughtful, but kick you in the butt, new best friend. I heard myself cheering loudly at some parts, nodding knowingly and mostly just soaking in her words. Whether you read a few chapters or like me, start to finish, you will be inspired and comforted all at the same time. This book should not only be read by those dealing with illness, but it is a must read for every parent, spouse or friend of someone that is.
