Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA?Short, newspaperlike articles discuss important political events, cultural milestones, and stories of human interest. The present tense involves readers immediately and heightens interest in the discussion. The original volume of the same name (Chronicle Publications, n.d.) covered from "Prehistory: Asians cross land bridge to new world" to "U.S.?Canada pact of 12/24/94." (sic, they use library capitalization rules). This new volume continues through "Terrorism hits Oklahoma" of spring 1995. Numerous adjacent colorful paintings or photographs are identified and draw readers to the articles. Annual timelines open each section and can be used in and of themselves. Appendixes provide brief information on each president and state. The index is comprehensive and detailed.?Claudia Moore, W.T. Woodson High School, Fairfax,

From Library Journal

This handsome book documents the history of the American nation from the arrival of Asian tribes (40,000-8000 B.C.) to the April 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Annual listings of significant political, social, and cultural events are arranged in eight chapters, each with a brief essay outlining the time period covered. While this reference has fewer entries than such chronologies as The Almanac of American History (Putnam, 1983), The Encyclopedia of American Facts (HarperCollins, 1993. 9th ed.), and This Day in American History (LJ 9/15/90), each entry includes a brief descriptive essay modeled after newspaper articles. Its readable style holds the reader's interest and is complemented by numerous photographs, art reproductions, drawings, and other illustrations. Supplementing the main body are brief, illustrated biographies of the presidents, histories of the 50 states, and a detailed subject index. Though the coverage is not as deep as that found in similar works, the tone and currency of this work recommend it to all school and public libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, breezy, and informative, April 12, 2000
This review is from: Chronicle of America (Hardcover)
"Chronicle of America" is a capsulized approach to American history from 1492 to present. Significant events are organized as newspaper articles that quickly break down the most important aspects of the event in a simple "who, what, where, when, and how" format. Contemporary illustrations and photographs are interspersed throughout each year to reinforce the newspaper approach.

Although especially handy for young students, this book is also useful when you need to just look up a few basic facts without having to wade through or locate more indepth works. Definitely handy to have around.

As a Librarian I use this book several times a week. There is nothing like it for putting issues in context. The newspaper format and photographs make it attractive to young people. I hope that a new edition will come out soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of quick reference, March 22, 1999
I teach high school history and I have, on several occasions, used this book as a quick reference for my lessons. My students have used it as well in their research in my class and have found it to be very useful and informative. I highly recommend this book for all of those interested in American history.
