From Library Journal
Denvir's ( Encyclopedia of Impressionism , Thames & Hudson, 1989) profusely illustrated chronological approach to the impressionist art movement succeeds beautifully on many levels. General readers will find the text completely engaging. High school and college students can use it to trace easily the evolution and influence of impressionism in light of political events and social trends from 1863 through the recent boom in auction house prices. Researchers and librarians will welcome the concluding 30 pages of reference data, which include biographical sketches (many with small photographs), maps, descriptions of favorite art locations, a thumbnail art chronology, a gazetteer of major impressionist collections, and an illustration list. In addition, the text comes complete with cross references that really work. This multifaceted book is recommended for all collections.
