About the Author

Michelle Paver was born in central Africa, but moved to England as a child. After earning a degree in biochemistry from Oxford University, she became a partner in a London law firm, but eventually gave that up to write full-time.

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness arises from her lifelong passions for animals, anthropology, and the distant past. It was also inspired by her travels in Norway, Lapland, Iceland, and the Carpathian Mountains—and particularly by an encounter with a large bear in a remote valley in Southern California.

More About the Author

Michelle Paver was born in central Africa but went to England as a child. After earning a degree in biochemistry from Oxford University, she became a partner in a London law firm but eventually gave that up to write full-time. The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series came from Michelle's lifelong passions for animals, anthropology, and the distant past-as well as an encounter with a large bear in a remote valley in Southern California. To research the books, Michelle has traveled to Finland, Greenland, Sweden, Norway, Arctic Canada, and the Carpathian Mountains. She has slept on reindeer skins, swum with wild killer whales, and gotten nose to nose with polar bears--and, of course, wolves. The first four books have been made into widely acclaimed audiobooks, read by Ian McKellen.

My 10 year old loved this series, and wanted to go to bed an hour early so I could read longer.

My 10 year old loved this series, and wanted to go to bed an hour early so I could read longer. I would read 1 or two chapters a night and he would still beg for more.

My son is really into dogs, and the story from Wolf's point of view truly interested him.

Some moments in a child's life, a parent just wishes to recapture, and I'll remember forever, reading this series to my son.

Michelle Paver has a great talent for story telling. Ghost Hunter is another great chronicle from Torak's life. I hope you take the time to read the first 5 books also!

Look behind you, Torak.
He spun around.
Two paces away, an arrow had been thrust into the earth.
Torak recognized the fletching at once. He knew the one who had made this arrow. He wanted desperately to touch it.
He tried to lick his lips, but his mouth was dry.
"Is it you?" he called, his voice rough with fear and longing.
"Is it you?...Fa?"

The dreams are coming fast and furious now. It's hard for Torak to tell what's real. He desperately misses Fa (his father) but knows he's dead. Still, when he hears his father's voice and occasionally sees him, he's shaken. Perhaps his father is trying to tell him something, like he is in danger and needs him. He is sure his father's spirit is not at peace, and now must do something to ease the journey into the spirit world.

The Raven leader Fin-Kedinn is full of misgivings. He warns Torak that these things can easily be the work of the Soul-Eaters. Their old enemy and powerful Mage, Eostra, is once more working her magic. She is determined to kill Torak and create a world only for the Soul-Eaters. Torak is in her way and has been much too long, and she will stop at nothing to get to the Spirit Walker. Fin-Kedinn warns the boy of Eostra's ability to twist reality and that he will walk into danger, but Torak replies: "You can't stop me."

Now 15 years old, Torak has grown stronger and tall. He leaves the Raven camp on his own, fearful that staying behind will endanger them all. He chooses not to take Renn or Wolf for these very reasons, so the danger will be upon him alone. The Eagle Owl Mage is after him, and he will meet her on his terms but cannot even begin to imagine the horrors and sacrifices awaiting him.

I truly enjoyed the whole series. I hope to read more of the author's work. I am an adult who is tired of all the overt sex and such in adult material and was pleased with the depth of content, character development and engagement in the series. I recommend to adults as well as young people. I was sorry when the series ended. I could have read on and on and miss the characters!

I am sad to see the series end! Ms. Paver has written an emotionally charged conclusion to her series & she keeps you in suspense right until the last page.

The series, Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, kept me interested in the characters and their situation throughout all six books, and the whole tale was resolved in such a way that all the loose ends were neatly wrapped up, but left the possibility of a new storyline to develop in the future. Although written for so-called younger readers, it is readable for any age. If this final book in the series were read on its own, I feel it would encourage the reader to seek out the earlier books to enjoy the whole series.
