The good news is that this is Raphael Sabatini, the king of swashbucklers, operating near his peak with his most famous character, Doctor and Captain Peter Blood. The bad news is that this is the same text as "Captain Blood Returns" so there are still only three volumes of Captain Blood stories. (I had hopes.)

If you enjoy derring-do on the high seas, or an Errol Flynn movie, buy this book immediately. However, if you haven't already read "Captain Blood His Odyssey" buy that at the same time, and read it first. In fact, while you're at it, order "The Fortunes of Captain Blood." You're going to want it too.

The critical bit is that "Captain Blood, His Odyssey" both begins and ends the story of Captain Peter Blood. When Sabatini returned to the character for "Returns/Chronicle" and "Fortunes" he wrote between the chapters of the original novel, deepening the story, if you will, but not changing the original end point.

But they each one return us to the wonderful world of the Spanish Main c. 1687--at least fictionally, a world of brave and elegant men, and women worth taking a few chances for. If you've read Sabatini before, he doesn't get much better than this. If you haven't read him, you're in for a treat.

... you will love Captain Blood! First read Captain Blood. Then read The Chronicles of Captain Blood (also knows as Captain Blood Returns -- yes this is the same book). Then read The Fortunes of Captain Blood. Your life will never be the same!

This book is divided up into numerous short stories about the adventures previously mentioned in Captain Blood but never described. Captain Blood is a fascinating, clever, adventurous, physician-turned-pirate who does not fall in love with every female he meets. He can make a heavy black periwig attractive!

You have not lived until you read the Captain Blood series!
