I had purchased this CD with the intention of getting one song, From small things big things one day come. I was pleasently suprised to find so much good music loaded onto one CD. From Crawling from the Wreckage to Slipping Away and some of the gems in between, I found the album to ROCK. Covering songs from Elvis Costello, Phil Spector, and several others, Edmunds reminds us of what he does best (and no one else seems to do anymore). I would recommend this CD to any music fan that appreciates straight ahead Rock on Roll, Blues, or Rockabily. There is something for everyone here.

Dave was a brilliant musician - you might describe him as an electric guitar virtuoso - and a good singer (though some of the early tracks are instrumentals), whose records often reflected his fifties influences, but his music always sounded fresh and exciting.

His first success came with Sabre dance, an incredible cover of an old instrumental that reached the top five in the UK and was quite unlike anything else in the late sixties pop charts. He had no further success until I hear you knocking topped the British charts in 1971 and also became a huge hit in America. This song was originally written and recorded by Smiley Lewis but was also an American hit for Gale Storm. However, Dave Edmunds made the song his own with his high-energy performance. Later in the seventies, Dave had further British success with Girls talk (an Elvis Costello song) and Queen of hearts, an original song that later became a huge American hit for Juice Newton. It is ironic that his biggest success as a recording artist was with a cover version, but that when he did come up with a great original song, it was somebody else who had the American hit. Baby ride easy is a country duet with Carlene Carter that is unlike anything else here.

Some great covers are included in this anthology, often better than the original, including Born to be with you, Singing the blues, Almost Saturday night and The race is on - so there's some rock'n'roll, some blues and some country in there. Bruce Springsteen wrote From small things big things come for Dave to record.

It isn't possible to do justice to Dave's music in a single CD but of those I've looked at, this appears to be the strongest. If you really enjoy high-energy rock'n'roll music, I recommend you pay the extra for the Anthology double CD but of the single CD's I've looked at, this appears to be the strongest.

DAVE EDMUNDS CHRONICLES (1968-1984): Roots rockin' revivalist DAVE EDMUNDS has worn many hats over his long career, including ace guitar slinger, twang-bangin' vocalist, producer to the stars (FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS, DION, FOGHAT, kd lang), and member of influential 80s band ROCKPILE with fellow pub rocker NICK LOWE. CHRONICLES (1968-1984) is the best single disc representation of his work, beginning with LOVE SCULPTURE's psychotic, psychedelicized reading of Khachaturian's SABRE DANCE on through a solid take on MOTOWN fave SOMETHING ABOUT YOU. Further examples of his impeccable cover tune taste include SMILEY LEWIS' raw and rhythmic I HEAR YOU KNOCKIN' done as an echo-heavy rocker, ELVIS COSTELLO's slippery GIRLS TALK taken to a new plateau, and earthy tributes to JOHN FOGERTY, SPRINGSTEEN, and GRAHAM PARKER. High-falutin' highlights also include salty takes on the GEORGE JONES warhorse THE RACE IS ON (backed by EDMUNDS' retro-billy peers THE STRAY CATS), LOWE's stop-the-wedding heatsinker I KNEW THE BRIDE, and the freewheelin' trucker tune BABY RIDE EASY, a joyous duet with CARLENE CARTER. RNB, new wave, bluegrass, PHIL SPECTOR-esque pop?...all just another day in the studio for a talent as limitedless as DAVE EDMUNDS.

RATING: FIVE OLDIES

My sentiments accord almost exactly with those of Pete Harris- I think this is the best single disc compilation of Edmunds' work. It's a great mixture of rock, pop and country and showcases Edmunds' legendary guitar skills as well as his simple but effective vocals. He's also a great producer and this CD shows that side of his work.

Obviously a single disc can't come close to being a comprehensive overview of such a long career, but the songs are well-chosen and there are no fillers or lesser-quality recordings here.

My main purpose in publishing this review is to help to offset the negative effect of the one-star review, which is totally unwarranted and based solely on the exclusion of one particular song. Those who would like a great CD of Dave Edmunds music should know that this is as good as it gets.
