Miss Read is always creates a wonderful world to escape to: many of the characters are charming, all have common problems, and even the uncharming ones are extremely human without being obscene. I loved following the growth of Joseph Coggs, the son of a drunken father and basically illiterate mother, from his entrance into first grade through his progress into Miss Read's class. And there's the on-going battle between Mrs. Pringle, the school cleaning lady, and Miss Read--you feel as if these are people you really know and can identify with.

I really enjoyed this book but then, I am a history lover. It gives a very good representation of a village school of that time and a glimpse into village life.

I really like Miss Read books. This combination is excellent. The only problem is the size of the book. Individual copies are easier to hold.

I remember reading the first of the three chronicles nearly 40 years ago and I was worried that I wouldn't like the story this time around. I was totally wrong. I loved all three tales and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a gentle read.
