The Gold Standard of "Classic Rock.",
By
This review is from: Chronicles (Audio CD)
First, it's not a "Millenium Collection" rip-off with 20 minutes of music. It's two CDs, 35 tracks, every essential single and album track, plus 5 live tracks. It's got a nicely-annotated 16-page booklet. The first thing you realize is how many "classic rock bands" RIPPED...THIS...BAND...OFF. Also, the vastly underrated Paul Kossoff really shines here. The mastering is as clean as it's ever likely to be, given the recording technology of the era. Every other Free compilation pales in comparison to this one. "All Right Now," "Fire & Water," "Oh I Wept," "Mr. Big," "The Stealer," "The Hunter," "Wishing Well"...they're all here, and they sound great.

The Chronciles double CD import is actually a superior collection to the other better known double comp called "Molten Gold- The Anthology".1.It's got a few more tracks. 2.The sound is equally good. 3.The booklet is well researched and informative 4.The price is better. Yes they chose the single version of "All Right Now" but I have no beef with that. Although the 45 rpm rendition is a minute shorter it is a FAR SUPERIOR mix. The guitars are louder, and the bass and drums punch more! The Amazon headline says "Limited Edition". That may mean that this release will be hard to find some day. And of course the price would then go UP.

A real gem with a major flaw,

This compolation is pretty good, the live tracks sound very good considering the period the recordings were done but there is one huge problem here. They have chosen to include only the single version of "All Right Now" which runs over a minute shorter that the LP version. They could have easily included both and gotten 5 stars had they done so. Buyer beware

WELL IT'S ALL RIGHT NOW THAT I'VE GOT THIS CD! JUST GET READY TO ROCK AND ROLL WITH ONE OF THE BEST BANDS OF ALL TIME. NO NEED TO SKIP ANY SONGS ON THIS ONE. PAUL RODGERS IS AT HIS BEST AND HE IS BACKED BY A THREESOME OF GREAT MUSICIANS. I LOVE ANDY FRASER'S BASS LINES AND CONSIDER HIM ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED BASSMEN AROUND. SIMON CAN BANG THE DRUMS AND THEN THERE IS MR. KOSSOFF ON GUITAR. ANYBODY THAT CAN PLAY LIKE HIM SHOULD BE CALLED MR. WHAT A LOSS. HIS ABILITY IS FANTASTIC WITH TREMENDOUS VIBRATO, BUT HE ALWAYS MANAGES TO LEAVE ME WANTING MORE. MARK KNOPFLER IS LIKE THAT. NO NEED TO DISCUSS INDIVIDUAL SONGS, THERE ALL HERE AND SOUND GREAT! ORDER BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. ROCK ON!

AWESOME! Probably the best live cuts I have ever heard on any CD/Album. A great investment for any Free, Paul Rodger or Paul Kossoff or any Blues/Rock fan out there. Very happy with this one.....

As a child of the sixties I cut my teeth on the British Blues bands. How did I miss miss these guys? Of course I'd heard "Alright Now", who hasn't? But I never looked past that small sample of this bands work. Obviously I'm no expert and I have not idea how this collection stands up to any other, but I can say I'm in love with what's on these two discs. Intense and more important, soulful, they were an amazing band. Better late than never.
