5.0 out of 5 stars The Great STYX Trilogy
Helllooo fellow Stygians!! This is a great choice of three styx albums to be put together. Crystal Ball- 1976, The Grand Illusion-1977, Pieces of Eight- 1978. I'm 16 years old, Listening to this great music. But I still enjoy the new music/bands as well. Styx is SO underrated. Especially now. They have had two recent albums, CYCLORAMA- 2003, and the most Recent, Big Bang...

Back to the item at hand. All three albums have a great sound, no audiable "cracks or pops" like on the Lp. Each Cd comes with a booklet. the only disappointing thing abouth this collection is that they are the EXACT same CD as if you were to buy each cd individually. I bought this thinking that the cd's would be remastered even more that the styx cd's already being sold, I was wrong, but didn't mind. It is SO much better listening to styx on Lp, but it is easier listeing on cd's if I'm traveling, or on the road. This is perfect for someone who does not have these records on cd yet, but if you do, don't bother, no surprises.
on a side note. STYX HAS NOT LOST IT AT ALL. Even though Dennis DeYoung does tour anymore(which is a shame!), Styx is still Rockin' the Paradise. I went to go see styx at the Big Fresno Fair, That was one of the best concerts that I have ever been to. Styx ROCKS!!!

And what is is really isn't a Chronicle of Styx, it's just three of their albums really in one set. Grand Illusion of course had some great songs (Come Sail Away, Miss America, Man in the Wildnerness, and Castle Walls, as well as radio favorite The Grand Illusion). Crystal Ball was a really weak album, but did have the song Crystal Ball as well as Mademoiselle. And Pieces of Eight, while having song bad songs like Pieces of Eight, Sing for the Day and Aku Aku, but did have Renegade, Blue Collar Man, Great White Hope and Queen of Spades.

For a true 'chronicles', my iPod has the following tracklisting:

1. AD 1928 / Rockin' the Paradise 2. Snowblind 3. Nothing Ever Goes As Planned
4. Too Much Time On My Hands 5. Half-Penny, Two-Penny 6. Come Sail Away
7. All in a Day's Work 8. Eddie 9. The Best of Times 10. Renegade 11. Mr. Roboto 12. Boat on the River 13. Midnight Ride 14. Suite Madame Blue 15. Lights 16. Miss America 17. Babe 18. Crystal Ball 19. Love is the Ritual 20. AD 1958 21. Blue Collar Man 22. Music Time

And while I was at it, I also put together a further compilation built around the Kilroy Was Here story with the following tracks which works really well:

1. Mr. Roboto 2. Cold War 3. Double Life 4. High Time 5. Love in the Midnight
6. Into the Fire 7. Why Me 8. Just Get Through This Night 9. Show Me the Way
10. City of Holy Faith 11. Haven't We Been Here Before 12. Not Dead Yet
13. Still Feel Your Love 14. Girls with Guns 15. Don't Let It End
16. Man in the Wilderness 17. Heavy Metal Poisoning 18. Castle Walls
19. Little Girl World 20. Don't Let It End - reprise 21. Back to Chicago

1.0 out of 5 stars Im rating this package only...not the 3 styx albums, September 3, 2009

This product is BS.
Record lable takes 3 albums and makes a box set of it...come on!
It easily wouda fit on 2 CD's or 1 Mp3 CD......or 4 albums on 2 CD.s.
Seems a waste of time, you save a few bucks buying this, but why not just take the A&M records "Equinox" through "Kilroy was Here" which is considered the best of Styx and features the Tommy Shaw line-up (except for Equinox)

This is just another record label rehashing something, no bonus tracks, no demos are included, waste of time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Again????, February 21, 2008
This review is from: Chronicles (Long) (Audio CD)
How many times have they release the same 10 songs? I used to really like Styx and I even enjoyed parts of their last two albums (um... let me be clear here... the last two albums that weren't live albums or compilations or Styx-as-cover-band-garbage.) I actually "stalk" this band waiting for them to put out some more music, and I get my hopes up every time there is something new, but 99% of the time they've just released old songs AGAIN. I don't know who is buying these same songs AGAIN, but will you please quit so they'll actually have to put out some new music to make any money?

5.0 out of 5 stars Styx lives!, October 18, 2005

This review is from: Chronicles (Long) (Audio CD)
This 3-CD set shows Styx beautifully hitting their stride, with Tommy Shaw joining the band and rounding out their sound. Prior to Shaw's entrance(which can be heard on the 4-CD Wooden Nickel set), Styx were doing a great job of "evolving into Styx," but this 3-CD set is a MUST for anyone who wants to own a very important chapter in the history of Rock and Roll. These songs feature Styx helping to writing the book on how to perfectly balance and blend "progressive rock" professionalism and creativity with intense, fun ROCK AND ROLL. A previous reviewer stated that Styx is currently about "how are we(meaning Shaw,Young, and whomever they can get to play with them) going to pay the bills, without Dennis DeYoung to carry us. Tommy Shaw coerced James Young to fire Dennis because he didn't like to do 'shows' and now they have to find other has beens like REO to tour with to draw people to their shows." I will refute that right now. Dennis DeYoung and Styx parted ways in 1999. In the six years since then, whether it be Styx alone or Styx co-headling with other "has beens" like REO Speedwagon and/or Journey, concert tickets with the name "Styx" on them have generated NINETY MILLION DOLLARS in ticket revenue. That's $90 MILLION! Or, $90,000,000.00.(Get it?) And that's SINCE 1999(since DeYoung's departure). Sound like a band struggling to pay the bills? Sound like a band on "has been" concert tours? Sound like a band who previously needed Dennis DeYoung to "carry" them? And by the way, on August 22 2005, "Styx Greatest Hits" was certified double platinum(see Billboard.com, click on "RIAA CERTIFICATIONS"). In concert these days, current keyboardist and co-lead-vocalist Lawrence Gowan(who has 8 platinum albums in Canada) is doing a phenomenal job breathing additional life and energy into Styx's music. His keyboard playing, his backing vocals, and his lead vocals are helping Styx's concert tours maintain and increase interest in the classic music of Styx, as evidenced by the aforementioned recent double platinum status of Styx "Greatest Hits." Every time Dennis DeYoung gets a royalty check, he should send Lawrence Gowan a "Thank You" note. And did I mention that Gowan has more vocal range than DeYoung? I have now. Buy this 3-CD collection, go catch Styx on their current concert tour, and experience the fact that Styx' music stands the test of time. Also check out their two studio CD's with Lawrence Gowan, 2003's "Cyclorama" and 2005's "Big Bang Theory." Both are awesome.

2.0 out of 5 stars these are the classic styx albums by the classic styx line up, September 30, 2008
This review is from: Chronicles (Long) (Audio CD)
ive said this once, ive said this many times, dennis deyoung was is and will always be the styx everyone loves and knows.he founded the band, he sang, and wrote most of the hits.james young, tommy shaw can get whoever they want to play with, they can put stuff out, they can package, and repackage what ever songs they want.the band styx in the big picture will be remembered for the stuff that was done in this time period and til 1980
around paradise theater ,after that the game was over, music changed styx did what they could do. the only real hit the band had after 1983s KILROY WAS HERE was 1990s SHOW ME THE WAY which was again written by deyoung.egos are evil and this band as great as they were together, has too many egos and to me this band finished for good in 1999.whatever is left is just a fossil of what they were.i saw them with gowwen,he doesnt
have the talent or the stage presence of deyoung and im sorry my friends he doesnt have the voice.

3.0 out of 5 stars styx2, August 7, 2005
This review is from: Chronicles (Long) (Audio CD)
"Chronicles" is the best of Styx2, meaning that those 3 discs are the best of Tommy Shaw. Styx is no longer about good music,it's more like just how are we(meaning Shaw,Young, and whomever they can get to play with them) going to pay the bills, without Dennis DeYoung to carry us. Tommy Shaw coerced James Young to fire Dennis because he didn't like to do "shows" and now they have to find other has beens like REO to tour with to draw people to their shows. "Chronicles" are the best albums Tommy Shaw has been on, and that includes his solo drab. Go see Dennis instead his concerts have the good old Styx feel. Don't buy "Chronicles" and put money in Shaw's ego, buy Styx1,Styx2,Man of Miracles,Serpent is Rising, and Equinox to hear the Real Styx.
