This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe Game (Toy)
I just played this game with my 7 year old son (going on 8). Overall, I would say the game play is somewhat stale. You essentially move around the board as one of the characters. The characters do have special abilities but overall they are not very important to the game. You get to move the white-witch and the wolves around the board to try and confront the characters but this did not seem very engaging. I think if you play with all 4 characters, the game may be more eventful and play better. However, if you are looking for a two-player game that is engaging to both child and adult, I would say you may not want to buy this one.
We have another game aimed at the same age range. The other one is the The Lord of the Rings game by Eagle Games. I liked this game even with 2 players (although the directions are a bit more complicated). I asked my son which one he likes more, and he just said he liked Narnia more. He says that in the LOTR game, the hobbits do not have special abilities and there are no cards to read. For me, I liked LOTR better. Now it remains to be seen if my son's preference will remain (we just played Narnia for the first time and we have had LOTR for a while) but my 7 year old likes it... so I would take that as an endorsement.
Logistics - with 2 players it is a pretty quick game (30-45 minutes). It does have some educational value in the sense of rolling dice, and reading cards (although the wording is a bit small). The directions are relatively easy although I had to look back at them a couple of times.

Back to the Drawing Board...., January 22, 2007
This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe Game (Toy)
My daughter and I were very excited to buy this game. We set it up and began to play. At first, it was a struggle to follow all the various rules of moving our perspective piece, plus keeping up with moving the pieces of the White Witch and her wolves and all the bonus chips. After a while, we began to get the hang of it but got bored with trying to keep up with everything. My thirteen year old daughter is a huge Narnia fan and suddenly found herself greatly disappointed with the pace of the game. Finally, she quit and went on to something else. I took it with me to my classroom of highly intelligent LD boys (upper elementary) who could hardly wait to play the game. They too, got annoyed with all the multi-tasking of keeping up with all pieces. I think the idea was a good one but would have been better as a computer/DVD game where the player keeps up with real "live" characters on a screen while the computer plays against them moving the White Witch and the Wolves (and the points for each player). The computer can add more realism with sound effects and moving characters and make the game more "interactive" and challenging. My daughter says that she also thought that "the game board was boring" and "the pieces are kind of ugly," not looking much like the characters in the movie. So, I challenge the creator of the board game to go back to the drawing board, (literally,) and make this a much more exciting game for kids and adults using computer interaction and graphics before the new Prince Caspian movie comes out. Those of us who are Narnia fans would like to play a game that makes us a real part of the Narnia adventure with all it's excitement and drama!

A nice game but a little slow, January 16, 2007
This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe Game (Toy)
I got this for my 11 year old son for Christmas. He likes it and says it is fun but that it doesn't teach you anything or stretch your mind. It is kind of slow paced and therefore not super exciting but still fun. We have only played it once or twice compared to the many times we have played the other games we got for Christmas, I guess we lean towards more strategic games around here. That being said I am still glad we got it becuase we love the Narnia books and this gives the kids one more way to interact with the stories.
