Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When the promotional material for the second volume of a manga series begins, "Wondering just what the heck is going on?" you know you're in trouble. It's a shame that the first volume of Chrono Code plunges readers into such confusion, because it has real potential. Ji-Soo Chung is an orphaned schoolgirl in search of her missing younger brother in Seoul, Korea, in 1994. But in the 23rd century she may be Yun-hee, a "chronoid" with time-traveling capabilities and a colleague of the swash-buckling Blade (who, in 1994, is Ji-Soo's Russian teacher, Professor Nicolai). Blade's search for Yun-hee, who is apparently a powerful time traveler, overlaps with his pursuit of Doctor Joseph, another chronoid who has changed the confidential code for a satellite called Riverside that has the power to stop an apocalyptic 23rd-century war. It's fair to say that Chrono Code is suffering from an overabundance of plot and a dearth of background. But its art is lovely, combining fight scenes with dreamy splash pages, and the story is intriguing, despite a sometimes clunky translation. Manga fans who have the patience to follow the meandering plot should enjoy what they find. (Aug.)

3.0 out of 5 stars TIME IS LIKE A RIVER, June 26, 2005
This review is from: Chrono Code Volume 1 (Paperback)
The problem with most works of fiction that deal with time travel is that travelling through time and changing the past brings a host of paradoxes and confusing "what ifs?" to the table. Chrono Code is no different. It starts out in 2274 as Dr. Joseph is resetting the security codes on a satellite named "Riverside" as security forces try to stop him. One of them calls himself a "chronoid", so far meaning that he can move faster than a normal human. But the Doctor is able to escape into the past. Then we go to Seoul, Korea 1994, where we meet Ji-Soo Chung, a high school student who specializes in beating up others in Kum Do, or kendo. She has no memory of her past beyond 4 years ago, except that she has a missing younger brother named Yun-Woo. As the story progresses it becomes apparent that someone is trying to kill her, and they just might be agents from the future, sent to eliminate her for some unknown reason. And then her brother shows up!

This was a mediocre start to a series, but it looks to get better, especially because it promises that the next volume will go back and fill in the plotholes in a sort of prequel to volume 1. The art was well done, but the action sequences took a little time to interpret because of all the dark lines used to indicate motion. I also liked the main character, Ji-Soo, who seems to be primed to make an interesting heroine. I'll check out volume 2 before I make a final judgement on Chrono Code.

3.0 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader, September 3, 2007
This review is from: Chrono Code Volume 1 (Paperback)
Complicated time cop conflict lacks guns.

You are dumped right in the middle of a complicated hunt for technology that is a key to a satellitle that can prevent a war. Maybe. Multiple different people with likely multiple agendas here, so unlikely anything is what it seems, not that much is explained.

Lots of martial arts and swords. Must have used up all the gun parts to make the time machines.

Pretty decent artwork too, a somewhat more adult style.
