A classic soundtrack for a classic game, April 13, 2001
This review is from: Chrono Trigger: Original Sound Version (Audio CD)
Back in 1995, Chrono Trigger was one of the last great RPGs being released for the Super Nintendo in America, and that was at least partly due to the beautiful soundtrack composed by Yasunori Mitsuda.
This 3-CD set features all the music from CT, as well as two unreleased tracks that never made it into the game (Singing Mountain and Battle 2, both of which are quite good, and which could only be accessed in the game through a cheat device). It's a Japanese soundtrack, so the liner notes are in Japanese - however, there are translations of the track list easily available, and the booklet is adorned with Akira Toriyama's artwork (of Dragon Ball Z fame).
Remember: the game was for the Super Nintendo, so don't expect sound quality along the lines of its sequel, Chrono Cross; however, the SNES was the first system which was able to reasonably imitate most instruments, so the sound quality doesn't detract too much from the experience. Also, the music doesn't have the soothing Celtic influence found on Mitsuda's later soundtracks, to Xenogears and Chrono Cross.
Highlights of this set include: on disc 1, Chrono Trigger, Wind Scene, and Fanfare 1; on disc 2, Robo's Theme and Magus' Theme; and on disc 3, Time Circuits, Schala's Theme, To Far Away Times, and Crono and Marle - The Distant Promise.
If you're a fan of Chrono Trigger, you owe it to yourself to buy this soundtrack!

Yasunori Mitsuda Composes a Masterpiece, June 9, 2000
This review is from: Chrono Trigger: Original Sound Version (Audio CD)
Yasunori Mitsuda composed a masterpiece that is up to par, if not better, than the work of Final Fantasy's Nobuo Uematsu. Although Nobuo Uematsu did 9 songs, the better songs are composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. The discs hold a variety of music. 2 of the songs on this soundtrack are unreleased. Disc 1 holds some of the better songs. The peaceful Morning Sunlight (1-3) is very relaxing and enjoyable, as is Peaceful Days (1-4). Guardia Millenial Fair (1-6) is a nice, upbeat, and joyful tune. Wind Scene (1-9), which was played in the 600 A.D. overworld map, is what first got me into Chrono Trigger Music and will bring you back to the good ol' days you saved Queen Leene on your Super NES. Manoria Cathedral (1-15) is also a nice, peaceful song. The Trial (1-21) will remind you of those stupid jururs who thought you kidnapped Princess Nadia, even though Nadia herself said she ran off! Disc 2 holds the worst material of the three, although if you had a personal favorite it might change that. The Day the World Revived (2-6) is a depressing tune, albeit good. Robo's Theme (2-9) is an ubeat, heroic track. The Brink of Time (2-13) is somehow magical, and I like it. Magus' Castle (2-22) is played at the entrance of Magus' Castle. It is a short, enjoyable track. Confusing Melody (2-23) is a haunting, yet quality melody. It is played inside Magus' Castle. Battle with Magus (2-24) starts off slow, and get's fast to keep up with the pace of the battle. It is very good battle music. Disc 3, in my opinion, holds the best quality. Right from the start, Singing Mountain (3-1) is a wonderful and unreleased track. It was most likely intended for the mountain where the population of Zeal were staying after the fall of the magical kingdom. At the Bottom of the Night (3-3) is a wonderful melody. Time Circuts (3-4) is the magical theme from Enhasa. Zeal Palace (3-5) is a wonderful, yet mysterious track. Schala's Theme is absolutely wonderful and makes use of multiple speakers. Sealed Door (3-7) is the mysterious tune. Crono and Marle(3-9) is a romantic love song that is of the utmost high-quality. Silvard (3-10) is a fresh, upbeat song that is used for the Epoch. Black Dream (3-11) is a good song from the Black Omen. Last battle (3-14) is good and very neat if you have surround sound speakers. First Festival of the Stars (3-15) is very upbeat and will remind you of the first time you beat the game and made your way around the Guardia Millenial Fair. Epilogue(3-16) is very good and combines songs. it is played during the credits. During To Far Away Time (3-17), the memories will flood back of the day you beat Chrono Trigger for the first time. Overall, this collection is very good. I recommend it to any music enthusiests. BUY IT!
