With over one third new material, along with updated and revised entries and maps, this second edition is essential for all students of political science, history, and international relations. Also includes 38 maps.

Each volume offers a table of contents and a list of maps. The material is arranged chronologically from the arrival of settlers at Jamestown, Virginia (May 24, 1607), to George W. Bush's inauguration as U.S. president (January 20, 2001). Each event is described in summaries ranging from a paragraph to two pages in length. More than 30 percent of the material is new. A select bibliography of reference guides and general titles is arranged in a way that mirrors the chronological organizations of the main text.
Maps and cross-references add value, as does the appendix, which contains brief biographies of U.S. Secretaries of State from 1781 to 2001. The extensive index cites only page numbers and provides a volume key at the bottom of each page; including the volume number with the citations would save researchers a step.
Though there are numerous chronologies available, this one is unique--and timely--in its focus on U.S. relations with the rest of the world. The update will be a welcome addition and valuable resource for almost any library, whether academic or public. It is a useful complement to titles such as Scribner's Encyclopedia of American Foreign Policy [RBB My 15 2002] and the Encyclopedia of U.S. Foreign Relations (Oxford, 1997). RBB
