Editorial Reviews

2011 five CD anthology from the British rockers that collects all of the songs they recorded for Chrysalis Records from 1973 to 1979. This set chronologically charts UFO's career including 1979's hit single 'Doctor Doctor,' as well as the tracks that made them staples on FM radio during the '70s. This collection boasts a previously unreleased concert from UFO's debut U.S. tour, recorded in 1974 at Atlanta's Electric ballroom, as well as BBC radio sessions. 81 tracks total.

5.0 out of 5 stars A six album+ compilation September 15, 2011
By Jrum C.
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Received this 2 days after 9/13/11 release. Had not heard of ufo for 30+ yrs since high school: recently revisited "Strangers" and "Obsession" as loaners, so then went looking... This is an amazing set, having all 6 original albums from "Phenomenon" to "Strangers in the Night", PLUS a (previously unreleased) 46 min live set from '74 (very good, even if vocal a bit off), and several alternate recording sessions and radio edits. Wow, I had no idea they were as good as they were, from the get go. I cannot compare sound quality between various prior releases, as I have not been keeping track; however, I think this collection sounds just great on it's own! Individual titles have been re-released recently, with "bonus" tracks added: I do not believe those added tracks made it to this 5 disc set. ALSO: view magnified picture of cd set back, and consider tracking order. All albums are in chronological sequence, but with assorted additions, some albums are split over successive discs (i.e. disc 2 ends with "Force It" side 1, then disc 3 starts with "Force It" side 2). Not a quibble, it just hearkens back to the 'turning record over' era (ah, am dating myself!). 6 album set, new for $20: zero complaints here! (RE: set case: 5 cd trays in 4 hinge fold-out case. Seems a bit fragile, but will take care of!)

UPDATE: listened to in entirety, I found not one bit of filler in this collection. Some may not agree, but different versions of same songs (incl. live, alt. take, or radio edited) are all well done and have just enough variation to keep interest (disc 4 has a blistering "Lights Out"). ...and it's curious how a song can be mutil-edit for 'single' purposes, by shaving off 30 whole seconds. What are people thinking?

If you are a fan of UFO during the period when Michael Schenker was with the band in the 1970's, the five disc boxed set UFO: Chrysalis Years (1973-1979) is a compilation worthy of some consideration. It contains remastered versions of the band's five studio recordings Phenomenon (1974), Force It (1975), No Heavy Petting (1976), Lights Out (1977), and Obsession (1978), plus the live album Strangers In The Night (1979), as well as bonus tracks, and alternate versions.

There are a total of 81 songs, including nine tracks from a previously unreleased 1974 live performance in Atlanta. There are also four alternate versions of songs not previously available on CD [Doctor Doctor, Try Me, Only You Can Rock Me, and On With The Action (Live)], and three songs each from sessions with Bob Harris in 1974, and John Peel in 1977. Lastly there is Give Her The Gun and Sweet Little Thing, Michael Schenker's first studio recordings with UFO, after leaving the Scorpions in 1973.

There is a booklet with liner notes and a brief interview with singer Phil Mogg. When Schenker joined founding members Mogg, drummer Andy Parker, and bass player Pete Way, sparks began to fly and UFO began to ascend the hard rock ladder, eventually working their way near the top, where as fate would have it, the troubled Schenker left the band just as they were beginning to break through. UFO unfortunately lost momentum, which they were never able to regain.

The songs are arranged mostly in chronological or album order, so you can follow the evolution in the band's sound. For example there is a noticeable difference between Force It and No Heavy Petting, when keyboard player Danny Peyronel joined the band. Peyronel did some remarkable work on this very significant album in the development of the band.

It's hard to argue with the quality of this boxed set of the band's six albums with former Scorpion's guitar slinger Michael Schenker. Opening with the first single that the band recorded with Schenker this set from includes their six albums recorded between 1973-1979 (Phenomenon, Force It, No Heavy Petting, Lights Out,Obsession and Strangers in the Night)but also includes key John Peel sessions, a key appearance from the TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test", single edits, b-sides plus an unreleased appearance at The Electric Ballroom.

The remastering by Peter Mew is exceptionally good--nicely capturing the sonics of producer Ron Nevison and Leo Lyons (who produced the band's first two albums for Chrysalis). The booklet includes a brief but informative interview with lead singer Phil Moog discussing everything from Schenker's frequent departures during their tours as well as his feelings about the covers created by Hipgnosis.

Spread out over five discs this budget priced CD boxed set is set up chronologically and while some of the single A side edits make feel like a duplicate to some fans, they were sometimes mixed slightly differently to take advantage of the radio format (in addition to their edits) so will be essential for hardcore fans (although admittedly some of the singles are little more than edited versions sometimes faded early).

As with the sets by Be Box DeluxeFuturist Manifesto: Harvest Years 1974 - 1978and Robin Trower
