5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, But Has Some Rough Spots, July 23, 2010

A lot of variety here, and anytime you have so much variation it can be difficult to make it all work. The band does a good job though...And despite a few rough patches, mainly vocals and production (both tolerable though), I can't seem to stop listening to it. I always find myself coming back for more!

Definitely worth a listen.

1 - Outspoken (Great opening track, 5/5)
2 - The Daylight Falls (Best song on the album, love the breakdown, 5/5)
3 - Serein (Good Instrumentally, but Vocals are weak, 3/5)
4 - Destiny's Choice (Epic! Awesome Keyboards, 4.5/5)
5 - Infancy (Solid Song, Fun to Turn Up Load in the car, although a bit nu-metalish, 4/5)
6 - The Face (Kind of an interlude to next song, sort of boring but works, 3/5)
7 - "To Mend" (A great composition musically, vocals and production could be better though, 4.5/5)
8 - "Starting Song" (Best vocal performance on album, 4/5)
9 - "Stars" (Short instrumental, bit cheesy, but overall ok, 3/5)
10 - "Aura" (Heavist song on the album, but redundant though, 3.5/5)
11 - "The Sandman is Jesus" (I don't know what to say, awesome! 5/5)

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathing Life Into a Dead Genre..., September 28, 2007
By
This review is from: Chrysalis (Audio CD)
Well it's been awhile since I heard anything unique come out of the Metal genre. But the self-titled debut from southern California's Chrysalis delivers. Unlike many of their contemporaries, the band shows a willingness to experiment, and go outside what is considered norm for the genre.

The quintet is also able to combine classical piano, strings, technical metal shredding, aggressive and singnig vocals, and even the occasional funky slap bass. All without a hiccup.

After a few listens, it's apparent that a great amount of thought was put into each song. There is so many little details throughout the whole record that, IMO, really take the music to the next level.

If anything, this record is worth a spin based simply on it's well executed attempt to do something different. Great album, and definitely a band to keep your eye on.
