About the Author

Howard Hibbett is Victor S. Thomas Professor of Japanese Literature, Emeritus, at Harvard University. He received his doctorate in Japanese literature from Harvard, taught at the University of California, and has lived in Japan at various times. Among his numerous translations from Japanese are Beauty and Sadness by Kawabata Yasunari and Tanizaki Jun'ichiro's Diary of a Mad Old Man, The Key, A Portrait of Shunkin, and Quicksand. His original publications include The Floating World in Japanese Fiction, which focuses on the work of Ihara Saikaku and his follower Ejima Kiseki.
