This is a great war book., June 5, 2001

This review is from: Chrysanthemum in the Snow (Hardcover)
I have read virtually every book I can find on warfare, and "Chrysanthemum in the Snow" definitely rates in my top ten. It is a story of an Army platoon fighting on the front lines during the latter stages of the Korean War. The author, James Hickey, does a fantastic job in developing the characters. The book is a lot more than just "blood and guts." The reader gets into the minds of the soldiers fighting the World War One-style trench warfare, and one can really sense the hopelessness and futility of their predicament. The main battle centers on the assault on Heartbreak Ridge. Do not let the title mislead you. It is not a typical title for a book about war, but by the end of the book, the reader will feel that there could be no other title for it. I heartily recommend this book.
