Editorial Reviews

CHUCK CLOSE, an astounding portrait of one of the world's leading contemporary painters, was a parting gift from filmmaker Marion Cajori before she died. With editing completed by Ken Kobland, CHUCK CLOSE limns the life and work of a man who has reinvented portraiture. Close photographs his subjects, blows up the image to gigantic proportions, divides it into a detailed grid and then uses a complex set of colors and patterning to reconstruct each face. The genius of the film is not only that it allows the artist to illuminate his methodology (he is wonderfully articulate), but also that it features his friends and colleagues (Brice Marden, Robert Storr, Dorothea Rockburne, Philip Glass, Arne Glimcher, Kiki Smith, Elizabeth Murray, Alex Katz, Kirk Varnedoe, among others) who make important contributions to appreciating Close's gifts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chuck is Amazing April 12, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I loved this video. I recently saw my first works by Chuck Close which are part of the FIsher collection at San Francisco MOMA. His work is astounding. I am an artist and watching Chuck work was wonderful and inspiring. This video is so special not only to watch Chuck work but to see and hear all of the other artists he comes into contact with. The filming of his wife in their garden was beautiful. I am so glad I purchased this video and will enjoy watching it many times. Thanks Chuck for creating paintings like no other artist. Each little square or figure that becomes part of a face is art.

5.0 out of 5 stars My high school class had no problems December 22, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
What I like about this film is that besides seeing Close make a painting from start to finish, there are mini-bios of many of the artists he has painted. You get a real sense of the art world from the mid 60's through the 1980's. As for the nudity, my students had no problems, but then again my high school students also work from the model. I think there are probably very few high schoolers these days who have not seen a picture of a nude person and this one is in no way titillating. Good film.

This is an amazing bio because it includes Chuck Closes' bio,his work plus introduces his models-fellow artists,as well as the impact being a quadriplegic has had on his life and work.I showed this to advanced high school students and it had a very positive affect on them. The video showcases many 20th century artists and the various sensibilities. It is a good 2 hrs and it packs a punch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly inspiring June 30, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
What an artist - I have liked Chuck Close's work for some time, but seeing how he puts his paintings together makes me admire his work even more. The way he starts in one corner and meticulously works his way across an immense canvas square by square to produce a wonderfully coherent work of art is astounding.

Not only is he an admirable artist, but the documentary also protrays him as an amazingly strong, instelligent, sophisticated and refleshingly non-cliche-artist man.

All thumbs up for this beautiful and touching documentary!!

Really let's you see Close at work and understand his thought process behind his different series. Interviews with contemporaries and family help to round out this excellent portrait. Highly recommended!

This documentary was great for my high school class. They were interested in every part of it. Now we need a video with a more current and updated view of the artist's life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not good for kids
There is not a rating on this film. Do not purchase for use in an art classroom with kids due to a couple scenes with pictures of nude women.
