Great cookbook as well as stories about cowboy life!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Chuck Wagon Cookin' (Paperback)
The book has some wonderful recipes for outdoor grub. Some are old and some don't use traditional units of measure. They are all great dishes, though. Stella also intersperses stories about camp cooks she has known, how they did things, what was important to them, etc. These stories are a great documentation of the western cowboy life. The section on sourdough is especially good.

Great cookbook for those that still yearn for the days of the lonesome prairie. And the beans and bacon that we can smell simmering. I own quite a few of these old west, chuck wagon style cookbooks, and to be honest I have never found any of them to be disappointing. They all seem to have different recipes, and carry their own style as to trivia and western lore. This chuck wagon cookin' is no different, and a fine choice. Recommended...

Chuck Wagon Cookin' tells the real stories of cowboy life on the range while mixing biscuits, hauling water and cooking beans. Stella Highes paints wonderful word pictures using humor, circomstance and history. Her love of the Southwest, the cowboy life and especially of her cowboy, Mac Hughes, comes through on every page. This is a wonderful cookbook, a detailed history book and a good look at an American way of life that has almost disappeared.Highly recommended book to buy and keep forever.

I was glad to get all her cook books that she had published by Western Horseman magazine. If you like the ways of the old time ranch Cowboy, be sure and try this one. Stella and Richard Bolt were two who had been there at the "Wagon"! You can't go wrong with this one! 10+

This isn't really a cook book! It has reciepes in the back which are good but the best and most fun are the stories about chuck wagon roundup cooks. These guys were the unsung heros of the west and were usually nasty-tempered, irritable, petulant, always on the prod and "tetchy" as hell. All of this was due to the nature of their job. A man might be the sweetest dispositioned human that ever walked the face of the earth; he could be kind and benevolent, mild tempered, good-natured, amiable and placid, but just let him hire out as a cook for some roundup and his character would change as drastically as Jekyll and Hyde. A very funny and fun, fun, fun, read.
