This is a recommended film for sci-fi/horror/creature-feature fans who can view R-rated films. Children are strongly cautioned.

To call this an epic would be misleading, yet this very creepy film is quite eerily effective without gore or CGI. It has actors we have all heard of. It has a plot -- YES, a plot, of sorts. Watch C.H.U.D. alone and you may start feeling queasy. Watch it alone at night and you may find yourself turning on lights and talking to yourself while you quickly try to locate another human being ... as if another human could save mere mortal humans from "C.H.U.D."! Has anyone lived to tell us anything about THEM firsthand?

So this is a mystery and there are people vanishing. We have homeless people that may be the victims, or the fiends, or both. We have what looks like a big government cover-up, but what is it about and who is doing the covering up? We have something coming out of the sewers in Manhattan, of all places, and it gets scarier all the time. Who will be next and where is this story going? Like I said, "YES, THERE IS A PLOT"!

C.H.U.D. is an anachronism as films go, something which is already extinct when it was made, which is probably how it surprises audiences and scares them a little without terrifying or grossing them out. You might say that they just don't make films like C.H.U.D. anymore and its a darn shame.

4.0 out of 5 stars C.H.U.D January 23, 2006
A Kid's Review
Format:VHS Tape
PLOT-New York City's homeless are being mutated into cannibalistic, slimy monsters who live in sewers. It's up to a photographer and a soup kitchen owner to save the world from C.H.U.D

REVIEW-Ah, the memories. I first saw this film when I was just a wee lad. I thought it was great! And now, after watching it again, it certainly lives up to my expectations. I love B movies, but you would know that from my other reviews. Naturally, I had to own this classic! The acting was dead on (Daniel Stern stole the show), as was the music, which really fits the mood of the film. The atmosohere is really claustrophobic and gritty, it actually made me feel worse about the homeless! Also, the tight pace and numerous jump moments kept me contentedly lapping up every second! However, it's not perfect. There's but 2 things that really needed improvement.

1. There were a lot of parts of this movie that were very talky. Some parts were pretty dull.

2. I don't think they showed enough of the monsters. Though I appreciate how when I least expected it, a C.H.U.D would pop out and eat someone!

ACTING-Perfect! Definetely one of the best parts of the film! Everyone put in a great performance and really captivated me...a first for a B movie. Once again, Daniel Stern, you da man!!!

GORE-Also one of the best parts of the film. We get bloody gunshot wounds, a sword decapitation, at least 5 severed heads, torn apart leg, blood squirting out of a shower drain, a hobo literally torn in half with intestines hanging out, and some severed limbs.

SOUNDTRACK-We get some bad rock tunes, and a great score that really set the mood of the film! I love it! I wonder if I can find it on the internet...

OVERALL-Definetely a classic cheesy movie which deserves to be on the shelves of all horror fans. It had awesome acting, a fairly good pace, great gore scenes, and creepy monsters. Just be prepared for some kind of slow parts.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok monster movie for the faint hearted. April 30, 1999

Good start for a horror movie, but some cheesy parts. The mood is creepy but the plot is corny. There could have been better effects, but it is better than its sequel. Try it out you might like it, hardcore horror fans probably won't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bossest movie ever made!!!!!!! June 8, 1999

Let me just tell you that if you have not seen the movie, CHUD, you are not living a complete life!! Seriously, this movie will most definitely get you where it counts!! Daniel Stern plays an excellent AJ. Look for a possible CHUD 3 starring, Randy Deeks, Dan Kubiak, and Jim Butler. Those three actors are three of the most talented artists around!! You should see what they can do!! May the C.H.U.D. be with you!!
