This review is from: Church Bell Blues [IMPORT] (Audio CD)
Catherine Maclellan's "Church Bell Blues" is a soft folk work with Maclellan's voice and acoustic guitar. Her songs take root with repeated listenings, shining like fine jewels. "Emily's Song" is a lovely ballad with Maclellan's hushed vocals expressive & timeless, "Your whole life's changing, You got the house for sale, 23 years rearranging, each breath seems a sad exhale." "Too Easy" adds a drummer and rolls in more upbeat. "There You Are" has Catherine's lovely soft vocals that remind me a bit of Gretchen Peters' soft supple tones, "I long for those endless days of us not doing a thing, Keep the world at bay, let the telephone ring, When there is no answer in the dark, there you are." "January Song" has a soft gorgeous melody with Maclellan's voice like a gentle winter breeze, "It is January & I'm wide awake; Always feels like morning & I'm running late." "Brave Love" adds a full band & electric guitar to make the track stand out. Other tracks like "Snow Day" & "River Valley Plains" are also strong. Maclellan's father Gene wrote Anne Murray's signature song "Snowbird." "Church Bell Blues" grows on you like warming up under a warm blanket in winter. The soft gentle vocals feel lived and hang around long after the disc stops spinning. Enjoy!
