5.0 out of 5 stars Great laundry booster
I bought a case of six boxes of this from the manufacturer to get free shipping -- I use about 1/4 cup in my laundry with a little Borax and a TINY bit of laundry detergent. I'm surprised and pleased to find that even my oldest towels smell CLEAN and FRESH where before, even with line-drying outdoors in the sun, they smelled old and kind of sour. Where have they been...

Just call your local grocery store and ask them to order a case of this for you. I got a case of 12 boxes for $35 that way.

It's a great product, and when combined with P&G soap and borax does a good job getting clothes clean, but paying this much, or even a lesser price plus shipping, for your ingredients negates any savings you might have achieved by...

5.0 out of 5 stars White towels white!, September 14, 2011
This review is from: Church & Dwight Co 03020 Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (Kitchen)
I was having trouble with my white towels getting yellow, blotchy stains. For years, I could not figure it out. Nothing worked. Finally... using a 1 to 1 ratio, I mixed one cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda with one cup of 20 Mule Team Borax. I then added about three tablespoons of this mixture, along with a little bit of my regular detergent, per washing load, and "Voila" my towels were white. They smelled fresh and felt great! This mixture probably neutralized my water enough to release the stains. For a great price, you'll find this at all Walmarts ~~right next to the 20 Mule Team Borax. (I thank my daughter for the terrific idea...I now use it all the time.) My husband is the only one disappointed...he no longer has towels in his rag bag.

I used this product with boiling water and an electrolytic plate to clean a heavily oxidized sterling silver chain. I had oxidized the chain on purpose using liver of sulphur...my husband changed his mind about the chain. I was furious but figured I'd give this a try. After 7 or 8 rounds of putting the jewelry on the electrolytic plate in a glass dish...pouring washing soda all over the chain to cover it...then adding boiling water..it finally came clean. Baking soda simply doesn't do what the washing soda can.

It's just baking soda on steroids. But unlike baking soda, this stuff is sodium carbonate, which has a different and more powerful molecule. So, don't eat it like you can do with baking soda, just clean with it

I recently discovered the joys of making and having my own laundry soap. Having this substance is essential for that process. It's also good as a non-toxic substitute for making other cleansers and as a laundry additive. It's especially helpful for those of us that live in hard water areas, because it helps to change polarity and keep hard water from staining and causing damage.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm tired of using all those toxic cleansers. I don't even use chlorine bleach anymore.

Those of you on here griping about the price of things when you write a review on a product are off-topic.

Well, I'm glad I didn't pay what some of you did. The 55oz. box of A&H Washing Soda was at my grocery store, (Market Basket, Raynham, MA) for $2.69. I used it for the first time yesterday along with A&H liquid detergent. When I went to move the washed clothes to the dryer I heard a clanking sound among the wet clothes, saw a glimpse of white, and started wondering how a tea cup saucer got into the wash. The white, pleasant smelling, porceline-like object turned out to be a clump of the washing soda. I pulled a couple of smaller chunks out of the bottom of the washer under the agitator. Weird. The stuff just coagulated for some reason.

I wanted to save money and start to live a little more green, so I decided to make my own detergent.

I think I spent like $12.00 for all the material and I literally have enough for hundreds (maybe thousands) of loads of laundry.

The clothes are totally clean - I even wash my gym clothes and they totally knock out any gross stuff.

The one really noticeable thing is my clothes are MUCH softer. Everyone comments on it - I was at the doctors and the Doc and the Nurse both commented on how soft my shirts were (totally random I know). I've heard it's b/c this stuff rinses a lot better than name brand detergents.

Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed...I'll never go back to store brands. For about 20mins work I have 3 months worth of detergent...can't beat that! And that is only using 1 cup of this stuff...it's a HUGE box! It'll take me 5 years to use it all!

5.0 out of 5 stars We Use it For Homemade Laundry Detergent & It Works Great!, January 28, 2012

We use Washing Soda with our homemade laundry detergent. We started using this about 6 months ago to make it and we LOVE it. Gets our clothes clean, has a light, natural smell and is much cheaper than commercial brand products (depending on where you buy it).

The Washing Soda provides the "cleaning" power of the soap mix. Some people have also mentioned it works sort of like OxyClean -- a detergent booster.

Here is the recipe:

1 bar of fels naptha - grated
1 cup of 20 Mule Team Borax
1 cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda

If you buy the 55 oz. Washing Soda it will make 6 batches of the homemade detergent (for which you would need 6 bars of fels naptha & 1 76 oz. box of Borax). Making 6 batches is equivalent to about 2 gallons of detergent. We bought an 8.1 quart snap ware container to hold the soap and it works great. It takes probably 30 minutes to an hour to make 6 batches with the biggest factor depending on how long it takes to grate the fels naptha (we have two of us making it -- if you only had one you might have to take more frequent "arm" rest breaks).

We use 1 tbsp. of the mix per laundry load and feel like it does a great job. One of our friends only uses 1/2 tbsp. but we feel like that is really cutting it low.

Unfortunately the Amazon purchase of these products seems to be much higher than several other company's price points. We subsequently found the products cheaper on DrugStore.com (and found an online coupon for $5 off & free shipping!), and the other day notice our local Walmart sells them even cheaper than DrugStore.com. Using the prices at Walmart we can make the detergent for less than $0.05 a load! Using the Drugstore.com prices it was around $0.073 a load and a bit higher with Amazon prices.

We make our own laundry soap and this is a must have ingredient when making it. Our town is small and this product is not carried locally, so we have to purchase it over the net or drive 30 minutes to get it.

Great old-fashioned laundry and general cleaning product. Great for removing urine and feces smell from clothes or linens. Use with borax and/or laundry detergent. You may have to soak clothing overnight. Good degreaser for stove or oven.
