This Hymnal, most widely known as the "Red Back" Church Hymnal, is a timeless Church treasure. It is jam packed full of tried and true Hymns. Within its pages you will find cherished songs such as, "Just As I Am," "Holy, Holy, Holy," "Victory in Jesus," "Power in the Blood," and many, many others, which have aided in leading lost souls to Christ. It also contains dozens of classic tunes by noted writers such as Albert E. Brumley, Lee Roy Abernathy, James D. Vaughan, Luther Presley, and G.T. Speer. You won't find any "7-11" songs in this hymnal.
This Hymnal is written in the Shape Note style, making it extremely easy for Church choirs and quartets to learn and follow along with the music. It is the hymnal that nearly every Southern Gospel Quartet in the business, has cut its teeth on.
If you are serious about Church music and singing praises to God, then you definately need to buy this hymn book.
My father was saved in 1952 at Treamount Avenue Church of God in Greenville, SC. He remained at the church for many years before moving away. He often spoke of the days when the church would open up the old "red back" and begin to sing the songs of Zion. The "red back" was very popular among Pentecostals and other evangelicals in the middle of the 20th century. One reviewer noted that the songs in the hymnal are often dated with none appearing after 1950. This is true but this should not alarm those who love to read, play, and sing the hymns of the faith. The songs, unlike today's shallow Christianity, often contains deep theology and a passionate desire for the fire of God to fall on His people as He did in days of old. The hymnal is compact, well made, and will encourage you in your walk with the Lord.
