More About the Author

I was a wild child, and I spent as much time outdoors as I could. The rest of the time I spent reading and writing'and running around in my imagination. When I was in elementary school, I "discovered" that my friends and I were really from another planet, sent here as Earth girls to observe the local fauna: i.e., humans. We came from a planet where girls and women had all the power, politically and magically. Men and boys didn't do much! So during recess, my friends and I often went on adventures to save the world. I wrote some of these adventures down, but I was a writer even before then. I used to draw pictures and staple them into books before I could read. And my parents bought me a small printing press, so I created my own books, too. And now I'm all grown up and still writing stories. I love my job.

I am absolutely delighted that this beautiful book has made its appearance, and that at long last, Myla and the Old Mermaids are bringing their stories and their fey wisdom into the world we know.

This is a wondrous magical tale, one to be treasured and to be read over and over again, learning something incandescent at every reading. The world needs mermaid sanctuaries - it needs old mermaids, young mermaids, novices, postulants and full ordained mermaid sisters. I've already signed up...

The ideas in Kim Antieau's beautiful novel make a heady magical-realist cocktail of emotional survival through storytelling, trickster wiles on La Frontera, women's wisdom, surpassing sadness, the stark beauty of the Sonoran desert, apotheosis through compassion, and earth-mother wisdom. I can see why Kim has so many ardent fans. I gave it 4 stars because I found the romantic plotline a little hard to believe, but the love Kim had for her characters pours forth from this work like an oasis in the desert she describes. When you become a parishoner of the Church of the Old Mermaids, you belong for life. You don't just read this story, you become a part of it. Encore!

I read Church of the Old Mermaids after having major surgery. I was living in a state of pain and loss, fear and worry, and somehow this book was just what I needed to help me heal. The old mermiads wove themselves into my life with their wisdom, humor and love.
Kim is not only a great storyteller, but also a wise and wonderful Sage.

I read a lot books but every once in a while I get a book that is just what I needed. This was one of those books.

Beautifully written it can not fail to touch you. The stories of the Old Mermaids woven through its pages make it impossible to put it down.

Once read I'm sure you'll want to search the wash of its pages for any hidden treasures you may have missed the first time.

Read this book it might be just what you need. But before you do close your eyes and take a deep breath.
