Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8-12-- If there is a pervasive theme in this book, it is that this fundamental American doctrine is continually evolving and that it is clarified, modified, or altered by constitutional interpretation. As Gay covers the myriad complex questions that arise in any discussion of the issue, she makes effective use of historical as well as recent quotes. Frequent illustrative cases are also included to clarify further the pros and cons of past court decisions. Related historical events, cases, documents, laws and court decisions are also reviewed, including the Pledge of Allegiance, Sunday Sabbath, the Plain People, conscientious objectors, church tax exemptions, Mormon practices, faith-healing, prayer in schools, homosexuality, euthanasia, and abortion. The final chapter reviews the process for challenging laws or government actions and reminds readers of why and how we respect religious diversity in America. Written for a slightly older audience than Victoria Sherrow's excellent Separation of Church and State (Watts, 1992), Gay's book is not as tightly organized or as clearly written, but it does have the advantage of an index. Both volumes will be valuable for general information and reports. --Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA
