Book Description

August 1, 2000
Woodroof holds up a fresh and hopeful vision. A radical vision (in the basic sense of that word--'to the root'). At this decisive juncture, this book offers a prescription for the confusion, disarray, and disillusionment found in so many of our churches.

At its heart, this new book offers a practical guide for distinguishing the enduring and universal functions of the church from its fluid and adaptable forms--precisely where many churches have experienced so much trouble and division.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In the spirit of informed dialogue, Woodroof's book is well worth reading." -- F. LaGard Smith, David Lipscomb University, Nashville, TN

"This is a greatly needed book about 'restoration'--a book that leaps past discussions about pattern and examples. -- Mike Cope, Highland Church of Christ, Abilene, TX

If you have roots in the Churches of Christ, read this book! It should be required reading for every member as it discusses "Family Business." Woodroof masterfully lays out how we must elevate function over form if we are ever to be "A Church That Flies." He draws on the history of flight, showing how the Wright Brothers looked at the function of flight instead of the form (as everyone else had done), and they found success.

If you are interested in making a real difference for Jesus in this world, read this book and put its principles into practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Somebody said what I've always thought!, May 23, 2001

There were basically two concepts that Tim mentioned in his book. The first was that for a church to truly fly, it must not only focus on "how" Gods' purposes are implemented but "why"? The second was the conviction that the Churches of Christ seem to focus mainly on the first century church and their own distinctiveness instead of the Messiah....wow. I highly recomend this book to anyone who wants to see their congregation get off the ground. It will truly challenge your thinking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging and Uplifting!, October 24, 2002

I read this book as I was coming back into the church of Christ fold and it definitely made me feel better about my decision. Having been raised in a "conservative" congregation, and still feeling most comfortable toward that end of the spectrum, the book really made me examine my preconceived notions about the purpose of the church. It was refreshing to know that I could feel the way I do on many church of Christ issues and have other people out there who felt the same way. And while I may not be 100% behind everything the author proposes, I truly appreciate what he has to say. Much of it needs to be said, and the ensuing self-examination needs to be done by everyone in the church. No matter what side of the liberal/conservative debate you fall on, this book has a valuable message waiting for you.
