This review is from: On the Church: Select Treatises (St. Vladimir's Seminary Press "Popular Patristics" Series) (St. Vladimir's Seminary Press "Popular Patristics" Series) (Paperback)
Allen Brent does a wonderful job of presenting this volume on St. Cyprian's comments on the Church. Cyprian is important because he gives us one of the earliest glimpses into the organization of the church as he strives to respond to the predominantly pagan culture in which he lived and ministered. Cyprian provides a model of how contemporary pastors/theologians/bishops could interact with their cultures. It is important to note that at this early stage, the Church was still very "charismatic"; this is seen early in the treatise "To Donatus". Brent does well also to note that Cyprian's view of the episcopate was influenced more by the setting of the Roman imperium of his city than by the Scriptures, from which Cyprian was trying to argue.
On a further note, "The Popular Patristics Series" is an inexpensive medium into the writings of the early Church Fathers |
