Book Description

Rediscovering Vatican II September 2005
Gaudium et Spes was one of the key documents to come out of Vatican II. It created a new chapter in conciliar history because for the first time a general council sought to tackle a wide range of problems that affected the life of Catholics: human rights, society, marriage and the family, culture, politics, economics, international relations, and war and peace. This decree corresponded more closely than any other to Pope John XXIII's desire that Vatican II's approach be pastoral, and because of that it may be considered the "crown jewel" of the council.

In this book Norman Tanner, the foremost authority on the decree, traces its evolution from its beginnings to its eventual promulgation at the end of the council in December 1965. He reviews its reception by the Catholic Church and other Christian churches, and its possible future influence.

--Gives everyday Catholics a look at the inner workings of the council

--those who have heard about Vatican II, but never really known what its significance for them and their Church is will read this book with interest.

--for the first time tells the story of this decree both at the council and subsequently

--a useful teaching tool in colleges, seminaries, church circles, and for individuals

This review is from: The Church and the World: Gaudium et spes, Inter mirifica (Rediscovering the Vatican II) (Paperback)
Written by a priest professor at the Gregorian Institute in Rome, a scholarly Jesuit priest renowned for his academic abilities, the book presents the genesis and meaning of our Church's most important social document of our time, a document now ignored at our peril as a species and a spirit.

Gaudium et Spes pronounces strongly our Church's and our Faith's position on matters such as war and peace, human rights, economics, international relations and so much more that needs to be addressed prophetically as a Church now more than other. In fact in conjunction with other official documents and pronouncements of our Church, we find ourselves as practicing Catholics unable to support in any way directly or indirectly the Iraqi invasion and its continued immoral, indefensible, illegal engagement.

The authoritative Reverend Father Tanner comprehensively reveals the roots of this document and its implications today. He also explores another document regarding the mass media. This volume, admirably published by that great and Catholic printing house, the Paulist Press, deserves a place in every Catholic library and household, and time in every Catholic hand as we pray about our mission in the modern world and our actions and words among other persons.
