How can the room be interesting when freedom is at stake?,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Churchill & The Cabinet War Rooms [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This tape is simply not that interesting. As the title implies, the main topic is about the rooms where Churchill and the British wartime cabinet met. Beyond the fact that the room was not completely safe from a direct hit by a large bomb, there is nothing else that makes the tape worthwhile. Basic facts about the room are insignificant compared to the reality that the outcome of the war and the fate of millions was being decided by the air battle taking place overhead. Other points of the tape concern the personality of Churchill and some his actions. Vintage footage is combined with a contemporary actor playing the part. While the actor does resemble Churchill, scenes of him playing Churchill pacing back and forth dictating a letter really do little to explain the events of the day. The circumstances and consequences of the war are complex and are not well understood by most people. Creating a tape for the purpose of describing a room where decisions were made seems to me to be an inappropriate use of creative energy. I cannot recommend that this tape be used for the study of history.

A fine, but not finest, hour,
This review is from: Churchill & The Cabinet War Rooms [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video tells the story of Winston Churchill and how he ran the British Empire from some basement war rooms in London during World War II. Not a regular documentary, this film uses excellent recreations in the actual war rooms, resulting in a new take on oft told events.
