The graceful and easy Churchill China Finlandia dinnerware is suitable for comfortable semi-formal occasions or stylish casual ones. A classic off white and navy blue combination, the pattern features a stylized wreath of stippled flowers and vines inspired by Scandinavian motifs. To catch the light subtly, the rims of the plates and bowls and the exteriors of the teacups feature an understated sculptural waviness. This 20-piece set includes four complete place settings, each with a 10-inch dinner plate, a 6-3/4-inch bread and butter plate, a 6-1/2-inch cereal bowl, a 5-1/2-inch saucer, and an 8-ounce teacup. The dishes are made from high-fired earthenware and finished with a glossy top-glaze to protect the printed pattern. Finlandia is one of the world's most enduring china patterns, this pattern has remained in production for over 100 years. Some of its appeal comes from its classic blue & white colouration, its Scandinavian inspired design never looks outdated. The swirling contours of the pieces add interest along with its floral design elements and together they project a great sense of symmetry & orderliness. This is a pattern that can be at ease for casual meals and charmingly fresh for more formal occasions.

We have owned a set (made in England) for many years and wanted to buy another set because we like it so much. To our dismay, the pattern on the new dinner plates was quite pale and faded compared to the more vibrant blue on the rest of the set (and compared with our older set). We advised Amazon and they sent us another set but the dinner plate pattern was still off. It seems the dinner plate stock is different from that of the rest of the set. It is still a lovely pattern and this problem may not disturb you but caveat emptor.

This Service for 4 set is made in England and of excellent quality.

The Service for 8 set made in Columbia is crap. Really.

Buy two of this service for 4 instead.

They're probably the best quality you can buy while still being dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe, in a pattern that's been in production since 1992 by Churchill. The author of the drab looking book "Microwave Cooking for One" has done a huge lot of work providing links to all the amazon dinnerware that is dishwasher safe in hopes of selling more copies of her book, including indexing *everying* Finlandia on amazon better than amazon has. Smart people will save time looking her up.

You'll have to decide if you want to risk the Columbia made teapot from amazon or go elsewhere for the real English deal.

If you're scarfing these up because of the price, search also for "Oneida service 12" --usually when these plates go on sale amazon also is running some very good deals on some really great quality flatware sets as well.

You also may be interested in Suzanne Von Drachenfels's book "The Art of the Table" (fun!) and Ruth L. Kern's DVD "Manners for the Table".

I waited 3 months for this item(which was on backorder) when I got it the set was from COLUMBIA. This is not what I ordered. I wanted the set from England.

The pattern on the dishes were vibrant but the salad plates were dull and there was a big difference. The pattern was blurry and not what I expected. The dishes were nicely packed. I did send the item back.

I was able to buy the series from an ebay seller two years ago.
