Unknown Masterpiece!,
By lawrite (Boulder, CO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cicada (Audio CD)
I first heard 13ghosts when they came up as a selection on the Internet music service, Pandora, and loved what I heard, so bought this album. No way was I prepared for a band that was this prolific, as well as on fire talented. As the previous reviewer said this album runs the range of American (plus Latino) musical styles, all to great effect. The songs are mostly on the melancholy end of the spectrum (they lost a great friend, once a part of the band, whom many of these songs seem aimed at, for the story go up to their Web site). My stand-outs are "Actual Organs," the absolutely heartbreaking "Robert J." (about their friend who either OD'd or killed himself), "Just Got Dead," "Dammit Toby" "3 Little Birds"--well, I could just about name every track. I paid full price for this album. Used at at under $2? Don't think twice about it, what do you have to lose for $2?
In my opinion, it's a travesty that a band of this originality, lyricism, literary lyrics, and real, raw, heartbreaking songs are not at the top of the charts. I hope they read a review like this and take heart that at least some of us out there stumbled across this masterpiece and recognize it for what it is. I'm not saying this is a good album--I'm saying this is almost a perfect album. If these guys go ignored by the industry and break up, what a loss. I came up here hoping to see that they'd come out with a new album, only to see this one is out of print. And let me also say, I am one picky music listener. If it doesn't sound like an instant classic, with so much music out there (and clogging up my hard drive) I just don't have time for it. This one from the first listening announces itself as something so original and true, you can't stop listening. Just drop the two bucks and buy it already! :O) And let's keep these guys making music!

A tour de' force of awesome,
By Dan L. Manes "Happy, clappy music person" (United States; Cleveland , Ohio) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Cicada (Audio CD)
The other reviewers covered just how amazing of an album this truly as and i argee! It is creative music done by a very talented band and should be heard by anyone who enjoys stuff a bit outside the mainstream. A nice blend of various styles of music, ranging from Sparklehorse to Phosphorescent to perhaps Earlimart and Beatles -the later years-
The cover may look a bit odd and kind of METAL'ish but don't let it throw you. Grab yourself this wonderful album!

The Scope of American Music,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cicada (Audio CD)
Having seen 13Ghosts play several times, I was taken aback by the scope of "Cicada." They are a great rock band live, both sharp and raucous, but this double album runs through the breadth of American music, sifting through folk, bluegrass, jazz, grunge, not so much as if they were using genres as ingredients as much as taking the necessary sounds to construct the songs as they should be heard. There is a delicate touch here on songs like "Worldshaker" and the heartbreaking "The Storm" cut with more uptempo numbers like the catchy-but-tragic "Robert J", and the catchy-but-feedback-laced "Just Got Dead." All in all a wondrous spiralling medley of music, and, since used copies apparently start at $.49 now, worth every penny.
