5.0 out of 5 stars A fast and fun read. April 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
From page one of Cicada, I was quickly absorbed into the world of Julie Miller, an investigative journalist on the side of the public good. The backdrop to this gritty thriller is the Australian landscape - coastline, harbourside city and lush country described so evocatively that I was completely transported there. The multifaceted qualities of Julie, the main character, intrigued me - toughness coupled with a vulnerability which meanders between endearing naivety and a luscious sensuality. The plot is fast paced, with the focus firmly on Julie's roller coaster ride to expose the endemic corruption around her. I really enjoyed Cicada - a fast and fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and well-written myster. May 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Being new to the Kindle store I have been collecting a few books when they are free. Cicada by K. Davis transcends the typical indie fare. Thank you! In fact Cicada ranks right up there with many of my favorite mystery writers. The main character, Julie, is a strong, compelling female reporter that is not weighed down by stereotypes and cliches. While on vacation she saves a woman from jumping off a cliff and this launches her into a frightening journey of murder and corruption.

I enjoyed the descriptions and language of Australia. I especially enjoyed the fact that this book is carefully edited and well-written and it is the length of a real book. K. Davis is going on my list of writers that I want more of.

4.0 out of 5 stars Corruption, Thrills and Danger Down Under June 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The debut novel of K. Davies, "Cicada" is a fast-paced, tense thriller. When she rescues a would-be suicide while on a beach vacation, ambitious young Australian journalist Julie Miller discovers that no good deed goes unpunished. Within days, she learns of a corrupt scheme that reaches throughout the highest echelons of Australian corporate and political circles. And if she's not careful, pursuing the story could be the last investigation she'll ever make. Davies brings her considerable insider knowledge of Australian journalist culture to bear in this tightly wound story, full of twists, turns and nail-biting suspense.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Thriller from Down Under October 10, 2012
Julie Miller, an investigative journalist, was just trying to take a break from work when she stumbled upon a whole new story. She interrupts a would-be suicide attempt and discovers that there's a much bigger story, one that involves twists and turns, dirty corporations, dirty cops, human trafficking, and threat's not only to Julie's life but also that of people about whom she cares deeply.

Cicada is set in Australia (K. Davies is an Australian writer living in London), and it was fun to read a story set in a place I love-complete with the Australian English. Some of the words or phrases may or may not be familiar to many readers, but they are usually easy to figure out and do not detract from the story. This book is reminiscent somewhat of Steig Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in that Julie is a journalist working on her own to bring down a group of men who treat women in some of the worst ways possible. The two differed, however, in the tightness and depth of plot. Cicada took some time to get into, but held my attention throughout. I did enjoy this book-it was very different from much of what I've read recently. It's an excellent debut novel.
