Book Description

Cicadas appear every seventeen years in such quantity that they fill the skies and harmlessly pelt anything that moves. The town of Anderson celebrates the coming of these insects with a festival that they call Cicada Song.

In 1987, a young boy named Jacob Ramsey fell for a girl named Sara whose family was visiting for Cicada Song. Little did they realize, however, that their young love would end ten years later during the most shocking moment of Anderson's history.

Time passes and the next Cicada Song begins. Self-published author Ellis Barnes is invited to Anderson as an attraction, and there he meets the quick-witted but guarded Sara, now fully grown and quite lovely. He quickly falls for her, but something from Sara's past prevents her from getting too close. Facing resistance from Jacob Ramsey's best friend, Stan, and the town drunk, Phil, Ellis is determined to uncover exactly what Sara's mysterious past is. What he finds will force Ellis to confront a faith-shattering tragedy from his own past, a tragedy that diminished his faith in the Christian church, but also one which might hold the key to overcoming Sara's private barriers. And what secret does Phil, the town drunk, hold regarding the moment that shattered Sara's life forever?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This author has a real gift for storytelling. If Cicada Song were written by an already established author like Nicholas Sparks it would have been a New York Times best seller. You will not be able to put it down; my sister and friend also read it and they were up all night and finished it in a day."

From the Author

Cicada Song was a bit of a blind project for me. Like with all my writings, I wrote the story for fun with no intention of ever publishing it. Then after some research, I decided to give it a shot and uploaded it eagerly, anticipating what others might have to say about it. What I found out was that readers have zero tolerance for novice errors and unprofessionalism with it comes to publication, and so I spent nearly a year updating and editing the story to the standards that it currently finds itself. It was hard and daunting, but I've grown more as a writer since this book was first published than I had in all the years previous. I want to thank the readers whose constructive criticism helped show me that I could be a better writer than I truly believed I could be. The quality of the story and the praise it's receiving is a testament to the readers who were not afraid to point out errors and show a self-taught writer that he always has room to improve.

Thank you,
Bradford Combs

3.0 out of 5 stars Ending Didn't Satisfy August 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Anderson celebrates the return of the Cicadas every seventeen years with a summer festival. Growing up in the same small town, Sara and Jacob fall in love early, but their love is strong and true. When a tragedy happens, Sara vows to stay true to Jacob, but, as the years pass, it becomes more of a struggle. When handsome Ellis Barnes comes to town, it becomes even harder, and her old friends have problems of their own.

If you can get past all the grammatical errors, this is a beautiful story. As others have said, there are many mistakes. Six times "lied" was used when "lay" was needed, as in "he lied down." There were missing commas, switches between the present and past tenses, and nominative case pronouns used where objective case was needed, like "between he and Sara" and "the boy who married Stan and I." Several times the characters names were mixed up and the wrong one named. Other problems included: "host" being used for "hostess," "role" for "roll," "keep" for "kept," "warn" for "worn," "afterword," for "afterward," "waste" for "waist," "bMandys" for "bellies," and "vial" for "vile." I could overlook all this, however, and enjoy the content. I was all poised to give the book at least a four and perhaps a five, until I got to the end. What a letdown. It was only 1/6th of a happy ending. A person that had been a main character with a lot of space and sections from this character's point of view faded into nothing. Sara's situation is only slightly better. I was disappointed and dissatisfied. What had been a sweet, beautiful story was ruined for me, and I felt cheated.

I admit that I originally chose this book for the title, but it was a true delight to read, with a lovely twist to bring the ending to a beautifully written, heartfelt close. It is a rare type of love story. I highly recommend reading this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book! September 21, 2012

I liked this book a lot. When I finished reading it, I immediately checked to see if he had written more titles.

The book was an honest look at faith and love. I appreciated the main character's faith journey being interwoven into the story line - not called out, but just there. The brokenness of the characters is relevant and relate-able. The grace and mercy of forgiveness was a great picture of God's love for us as well as the way He continues to reach out to us even when we've rejected Him. Primarily this happens through other people demonstrating His true character.
