5.0 out of 5 stars Loeb excellence as usual, March 2, 2009

This review is from: Cicero: Pro Quinctio. Pro Roscio Amerino. Pro Roscio Comoedo. The Three Speeches on the Agrarian Law Against Rullus (Loeb Classical Library No. 240) (Hardcover)
These six (or really five and a half or so, considering the short length of the remaining fragments of the Orationes de Lege Agraria) speeches are not Cicero's best known: the Pro Quinctio, Pro Roscio Amerino, and Pro Roscio Comoedo are Cicero's three earliest extant speeches, and his prose is not as polished as we find it in his more famous, later works; besides which, all six of the speeches, though not lacking in period detail useful to a specialist in Roman law, are for that reason extremely technical. A casual reader will find these speeches tough going; fortunately, anyone interested enough in reading Tully to venture upon works as obscure as these is not likely to be merely 'casual'. The excellent translation and extensive annotation by Caplan are very useful.
