Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two CD set containing a trio of albums from the former Return To Forever guitarist: Di Meola launched his solo career in 1975. Over the years, the jazz guitarist has played with the greats of jazz, though in the 1990s he turned in the direction of World Music. These three albums come from the mid to late '80s. Digitally remastered and slipcased, and with new notes.

Customer Reviews

Now, thanks to BGO Records, you can get all three of these magnificent albums remastered here in one set.

This is some of Al's best work on these three, but Tirami Su is the real treasure here, with Di Meola finally playing electric again.

This is very acoustic guitar, very introspective, a sound that you want to listen to sitting in a chair with your eyes closed.

I owned "Cielo e Terra" and "Soaring through a Dream" on vinyl. I could not get these on CD until now. I was thrilled to see that these were available. This music takes you to places that only Al Di Meola can go. While I own most all of Al Di Meola's recordings, these are some of my favorite; especially when I want to escape to some far away place in my mind. If this is the first time that you have heard these recordings, it may take a couple of listenings for you to appreciate the depth and complexity. I still hear new sounds and phrases in the songs even after listening to them for years. For me, that is what makes a great recording timeless. Also, Tirami Su is included in this set. Certainly a change of pace from the previously mentioned records, and equally as awesome. One final note: If you ever have a chance to see him perform live, don't miss it.

This one has been a long time coming, either as three single remastered discs or as a set like you get here. For years die-hard fans of Al DiMeola have had to wait, not just for the remaster but for the availability of these in any form. I never had Cielo e Terra on CD because I could not find it for a reasonable price. I was luckier with Soaring Through A Dream and the also included Tirami Su, but just barely. Many others have been unable to find them at any price. Now, thanks to BGO Records, you can get all three of these magnificent albums remastered here in one set.
It makes sense that these three would be released together. They were recorded for the same label and have something of the feeling of continuity about them. Listening to them together is like having a sumptuous meal. Cielo e Terra is like an appetizer, teasing you and having you beg for more. If you remember the time of its release, this was like nothing DiMeola had previously recorded. The sound was mostly acoustic and very atmospheric. When you are listening to this, notice the stark differences between the interpretation of Traces of A Tear on Cielo e Terra and how it comes off on Soaring Through A Dream!
Now that you have had the appetizer, dig in for the main course with Soaring Through A Dream. That title describes how you might literally feel for most of the CD, particularly on the splendid aforementioned Traces of A Tear. I don't think I've ever heard a dreamier piece of music. Other delights are Capoeira, Ballad, Marina, and the expansive title cut.
Finally, you get your dessert with the aptly named Tirami Su. On this CD, DiMeola caps off what he has been doing musically for the previous two CDs but also reaches into his past while giving hints of what's to come.

For 17 years all I had was a tape that I made of a Cielo E Terra CD that I borrowed when living in Japan in 1993. This is quite a different Al Di Meola, not jazz, or Spanish as he played with Paco de Lucia. This is very acoustic guitar, very introspective, a sound that you want to listen to sitting in a chair with your eyes closed. I played this tape so often, your emotions sour with the music. I was amazed someone can compose music and play guitar like this. And for 17 years nowhere I could buy the original CD. I found occasionally used ones at terrible high prices, and every time I did not want to lay out so much money for a risky buy. Lucky my tape was a good quality Maxell tape, dolby C recorded, so it lasted hundreds of times and it is still good.

So the moment I discovered this double CD with 3 re-mastered albums on it, I bought it. Cielo E Terra again, listening with closed eyes. But I noted quickly the remastering. Percussion is more pronounced, and now there are nuances that I do not like, like the volume of Al Di Meola his acoustic guitar sounds sometimes mushy, as if the re-mastering is done with moving the volume knob up and down in the middle of his guitar coming in in the middle of tracks. I wish the re-mastering was done less pronounced, that things were kept closer to the original CD.

For me it is all about Cielo E Terra, the first 9 tracks on the double CD. I do not care for many tracks of the other 2 albums on this double CD: "Soaring Through a Dream" and "Tirami Su". And the big problem is that the other 2 albums are totally different music, they do not match with "Cielo E Terra".

All in all, I had to have this double CD, but I will keep looking for a clean "new" unused original "Cielo E Terra" CD in the used CD world. My 17 year quest is not over yet.

Really, don't let that stop you. I have the original Tirami Su CD (as well as the other two), and fyi that 'title' track was only a little filler at the end of the album lasting one minute, ten seconds. I know quite a few people who'll be thrilled to be able to get these gems in re-release, and won't miss this little ditty at all, especially given the quality of the real songs on the album. I can't wait to get this to hear the effect of the remastering. This is some of Al's best work on these three, but Tirami Su is the real treasure here, with Di Meola finally playing electric again.
