3.0 out of 5 stars An over-rated Nobel laureate
I read Spanish-language books to try to improve my Spanish vocabulary and reading ability. I had already read this author's "Putas tristes", and his autobiography, "Vivir para contarla". In the latter book García mentioned that he had read Romulo Gallegos when he was young. The latter's book, "Dóña Bárbara", which truly IS a classic of Latin...

5.0 out of 5 stars One hundred years of pleasure, June 12, 2007
This review is from: Cien años de soledad: Edición conmemorativa (The 40th Anniversary Edition) (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books in a wonderful edition, July 1, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cien años de soledad: Edición conmemorativa (The 40th Anniversary Edition) (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
I first read Cien años de soledad during my last year of high school, and I have read it several times again since then. Everytime I read it, I remember the words of my literature professor, after he asked us to buy the book: " I envy you all so much, so much - he said- because nothing compares to the feeling of reading Cien años for the first time. I wish I could feel like that again." He was right.

This is a magical book, and this anniversary edition one that deserves a place in the library of all those who love Gabo.

Excellent novel; good in English translation, better in this (Spanish) original. Special "Royal Institute of Spanish Literature" edition contains critical works on the novel. Good buy, good book, great story.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't know how one writer can have so many ideas, May 11, 2008

This review is from: Cien años de soledad: Edición conmemorativa (The 40th Anniversary Edition) (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
In this, his magnum opus detailing the historical arc of the Buendia family in the fictional near-Caribbean town of Macondo, Marquez is stupefyingly inventive and constantly violates the basic storytelling principle of "show, don't tell." That's a good thing, because if he didn't a book where so much happens would be three thousand pages long, in which case I wouldn't have the stamina to read it in the original. Reading alternately in Spanish and English, I found that, in addition to increasing my vocabulary of fancypants literary Spanish by scads of rarely useful words that I've mostly forgotten since, I kept thinking, "Well I thought I was following what was going on pretty well, but what I think just happened is too weird to make sense, so I must be wrong." But then I'd read the English version to find out that yes, everyone in town *had* fallen ill with a variety of insomnia causing progressive amnesia, or that an orphan girl *had* shown up at the house with a bag bearing the incessant jumping and clicking bones of her parents, or whatever. That's magical realism for you.

I wasn't very good with literary Spanish when I started, but Marquez consistently rewarded my slow, dogged efforts to understand what was going on by putting something funny or amazing in almost every paragraph. At first I found it infuriating that he decided to only use two first names for all the generations of male members of the Buendia family, but I gradually got used to it. The only thing that bothered me a bit in the end was that he spent so much time on the clan's long, circling decline into the dust, and I didn't enjoy inhabiting their lingering, interminable decrepitude quite so much as some others apparently have.

5.0 out of 5 stars O tempora! O mores!, October 20, 2007
This review is from: Cien años de soledad: Edición conmemorativa (The 40th Anniversary Edition) (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
This is a (seriously) great novel... one of the strongest reasons to learn Spanish.... If you don't like it, don't blame the novel... Blame the times you are living in... Times, indeed, blind to true beauty and greatness...

I love to read. I bought this book because of the author, and that called my attention the title "Cien anos de Soledad", I wanted to know what this title means and how Gabriel Garcia Marquez could write without living that long, it was amazing the way he described all the situations that make me feel that I was part of the novel.I ussually read at night and while reading this book I just wanted to go to the end and read to 4 or 5 am. I will recommend this book very hardly
